AIBU to take the first and only kitchen quote?

It's been a struggle to get any builders to even come and see us to quote but the one we had high hopes for has come back to us with a reasonable price. This company came recommended through word of mouth and so far has been very attentive. Should we just go with them? I really want a new kitchen before 2023.

I don't always get multiple quotes. Is the quote within your budget? If you like the supplier/tradesman and it's within your budget you do not have to several quotes.

We went with our first and only quite as we had multiple recommendations for this person.

TheMissingMango · 29/09/2021 20:22

We've really struggled with quotes. I wouldn't wait if it's the price you were expecting and you like their work.

Darceyhemingway · 29/09/2021 20:35

If you're happy with the quote then go for it. no point in hanging around

PoshWatchShitShoes · 29/09/2021 20:37

If you're happy with recommendations and price, go for it! Lock in a date, as lead times are quite ridiculous at the moment

FoofOfTheWalkingDead · 29/09/2021 20:40

Thank you! I think the lead time might be Feb or March now, or even later if supply problems continue or worsen. We're probably going with Howdens for the kitchen. They say they're not doing too badly on wait times so that's one blessing.
We've been dithering over this kitchen for years and I just want it done!

My DH fitted kitchens before retiring and used Howdens a few times. We now know why he was never out of work in his 45 years and his quotes were mainly always accepted and that is because he always returned calls, turned up at times arranged and always quoted. A couple of times when the job was too big he would tell them there and then he wouldn’t be able to quote. Now we are trying to get a few things done on our house and are amazed at the slapdash attitude of some people, some don’t even ring back, let alone turn up when arranged.

FoofOfTheWalkingDead · 29/09/2021 22:27

@Mindymomo, we've learned not to pursue tradesmen for quotes. If they are motivated to do the job, they'll quote. It's kind of like 'he's just not into you' for tradesmen.
I'm still astounded at how flaky some of them are. I wish there were more like your DH!

I got 3k off my howdens kitchen from the first quote (within the last 6 months) so I'd definitely haggle!

Autumngoldleaf · 30/09/2021 17:29

Howdens seems like a they worse at quoting people inflated prices so yes definitely haggle

I went with recommended builders without getting any other quotes. They are in my house right now and I only moved in August. They started second week of September and have redone one bathroom (just waiting for shower attachment but sink and toilet plumbed, it's tiled and painted), kitchen is 75% done (worktops will take two weeks longer), upstairs cupboard has been built to house washer and dryer, all lights have been changed/moved on the ground floor, and next week tiler comes back to do another room and chippie starts on the built in wardrobes the following. The plumber got Covid which meant a bit of a delay on the bathroom but all sorted now.
I lucked out as a job they were due to start was delayed due to planning, so this is a filler in type job as they can get one room done and go and then return (they are going to be away half term to do another kitchen which suits me fine).
The recommendation was the key element in choosing them, I got a good vibe from them when they came to quote and the suppliers I've talked to like them. The subs that have come in have also been great and reasonable.
