convert house from gas to electric

Snidpan · 19/09/2021 13:44

I'm tempted. 'dwindling gas supplies', 'gas prices hike', 'government minister says "no threat to gas supply at christmas"', 'not enough gas to create CO2, says turkey farmer'

Also, expensive boiler servicing, let alone replacing, threat of co2 leaks, or even the occasional explosion!

Tempted to start replacing gas rads with elec, anyone here done similar?

Make sure you price up the running costs first. Even at sky high gas prices the cost per kWh of heat is still way below

& electric heating never seemed to be as effective

if you have the space, there is a thing called 'warmstone' which you install. it heats at night on cheap electric and then uses the stored heat to heat your radiators etc in the day. so you can keep the same radiators etc in the house, all you need to change is replace the boiler with the warmstone.

maybe look that option up?

A lot of electricity is generated by gas

as I write, 58.7% of the GB total

it has capacity to double in cold weather when demand goes up.

so I imagine energy from electricity will continue costing four or five times as much as energy from gas.

I wouldn’t on the cost of running alone. However, If you need to let the property out, the current EPC system penalises very heavily electric systems which makes attaining the necessary rating in order to let a property out difficult. There is much work to do in this area as electric reliant systems (even ‘green’ systems) such as air source heat pumps etc come online.

Occasional gas explosions are often due to people trying to fiddle their gas meter.

Other than cooking, the highest cause of house fires is due to electricity distribution or appliances.

Gas is safer than electricity.

Listen to Pigletjohn.

Electric heating is generally shit, if you like being warm it’s probably not for you.

FurierTransform · 20/09/2021 10:40

It will cost a fortune to both install & run - I wouldn't do it.
