What the HELL is this smell?!

Our bedroom smells really strongly of earth! A sort of soily smell. It's so weird. I don't think it's damp. It's not in the en-suite but very definitely in the one room. Any ideas what it might be? Thanks!

Are you sure it’s not black mould on the backside of furniture or underneath beds etc? Smells exactly like that.

Do you have a gutter outside the bedroom? Is it blocked?

Totallydefeated · 05/09/2021 10:23

Mould! Check under and behind things, especially where near to the ground.

Might be a water leak from the bathroom or radiator or round the window.

I’ve looked everywhere but no sign of mould. The wardrobes are fixed in - I wonder if it could be behind there? Gah! Who do you call about this sort of thing?!!!

Do you have climbing ive on your external wall? I experienced this with Ivy - it wasn't a pleasant smell at all!

Wahooooooo · 05/09/2021 22:26

No Ivy on the wall, it's a bare outside wall.

Anyone know who would I call to solve the problem?

mould or hidden damp...check gutters and pointing etc.

Change the carpet.

Have you had any sign of rodent activity? We had a mouse die in our wall cavity and that started off smelling really earthy, before going through a rotting-nappy phase that had us calling out two different plumbers to look for a leak from our toilet. I identified the smell from a post on here and it vanished as the mouse dessicated, although I bought some sachets on Amazon that helped.

It's the gutters! They are all blocked up, had a bloke come over and look at them today (luckily we had him booked for another job but he popped up and had a look while he was here). . He can't sort them yet because there's a huge wasps nest up there so getting that sorted first and then he can unblock everything. Thank goodness, I think it's probably the best possible result compared to pulling out wardrobes and lifting carpets!
