Is a conservatory a good idea with children?

We are considering adding a conservatory onto our house as we could do with more space. Ds is 10 months old at the moment and not yet crawling but presumably at some point he will be running around throwing balls/waving cricket bats etc. Is this a disaster waiting to happen or should we go ahead? Anyone have any experiences to add to this? Thanks!

we had ours built when ds1 was a few months old. he is now 5, no accidents yet.

paulaplumpbottom · 02/12/2007 17:28

My dd is 4 and we have never had a problem

Katymac · 02/12/2007 17:29

I have 9 under 5's in a conservatory every day.......no problems

I'd go for dwarf walls - less window cleaning from little hands

HeyThereNappiesGalore · 02/12/2007 17:29

i wouldnt worry about that.
they learn pretty sharpish not to hit windows etc with cricket bats. you tend to impress upon the importance of not doing that...

we have a conservatory and 3.5 children... is intact so far.

go for it

ChasingSquirrels · 02/12/2007 17:29

2nd dwarf walls

Go for underfloor heating if you want to make it child friendly, ours is freezing so not much use for a playroom.

HeyThereNappiesGalore · 02/12/2007 20:06

good point slacker. and good blinds in summer coz it'll be roasting, although, you can always just leave the doors/windows wide open most of the time like we do.

yes, highly recommend underfloor heating,.

Jojay · 02/12/2007 20:11

Yes, so far.

We had one built this summer and it's been a godsend. DS is only 1 though, so not sure about cricket bats etc.

We heat ours with a convector heater which is fab, and it cost about £50 versus £300+ for underfloor heating. I wanted underfloor heating originally, and it is fab - my Mum has it - but now I'm glad we didn't fork out for it when the convector heater is so effective.

We had ours built when our youngest was 11 months.

It has been such a great addition to our house, we love it!

We have one tall wall, with only one narrow row of windows at the top (so as not to overlook the neighbours garden), and kneee hight walls at the front, and full height glass at the other side, with sliding doors to our wooden deck.

QuintessentialShadowOfYuleTide · 02/12/2007 20:18

We dont have blinds, we have reflective glass that reflects the sun, so is like sunglasses, and you cant see in through the roof.

HeyThereNappiesGalore · 02/12/2007 20:23

ah good poing quints. we had one built last yr too and the glass is uv reflective to avoid needing blinds... how could i forget that? [der]

PaulaYatesbiggestfan · 02/12/2007 20:25

is there something you are not telling us nappies?????

HeyThereNappiesGalore · 02/12/2007 20:32

eh?

PaulaYatesbiggestfan · 02/12/2007 20:35

3.5 children?

HeyThereNappiesGalore · 02/12/2007 20:38

oh!

god no. SO not ready for that yet, if ever. not that im slightly overrun/overwhelmed with the three.5 ive got or anything... lol

i meant my dss who is only here part time. hes a whole child, but not technically mine or here all the time, so in terms of wear and tear on the conservatory, he only counts as half? made sense when i typed it...

PaulaYatesbiggestfan · 02/12/2007 20:39

oh yes should have remembered!!

HeyThereNappiesGalore · 02/12/2007 20:48
