Is this... a ventilated toilet seat?

Moved into a 70s fixer upper and tonight have noticed a pipe that enters the glorious 60s black toilet seat. It's labelled 'Silavent' which is apparently an extractor fan brand. Is this a ventilated toilet seat to get rid of smells!?

No idea (sorry not helpful) but how fabulously weird!

probably

I remember some famous inventor demonstrating a WC with an extractor coupled to the pan, IIRC it sucked through the pipe and rim that otherwise carries the flushing water. he demonstrated it by blowing cigar smoke into the pan.

A good idea but I don't think it achieved commercial success.

Yes, a company called Manrose used to make one too.

The Thomas Crapper museum might possibly like it. Grin

You may already know this, but with that sort/age of toilet your cistern might be asbestos.

Just make sure you don't crack it and get it disposed of properly.

It has a brand new Royal Doulton porcelain cistern so thankfully should be OK. Downstairs loo is a black cistern though so will definitely bear in mind. Smile
