Conservation Areas

What sort of things are affected by being in a conservation area? Is getting planning harder? What things would need prior approval that might not elsewhere? Is it council/area dependent?

I live in a conservation area, every single house has uPVC double glazing and a quick check of the local planning register shows all were granted planning for them.

In reality though my local council has 2 planning officers, the only thing they would come after you for would be knocking down a cat A listed building (and even then only if you told them you had done it!)
