Who did you have to help you move?

I don't mean professional moving people (which we're hiring) just people like parents, friends to help out. Me and dh are doing it all on our own, kids in nursery.

We did it on our own with the removals people. They were brilliant and packed for us too. (ds1 was 18 months at the time so that was a godsend)

MoreSpamThanGlam · 21/11/2007 14:46

Nobody - by myself, with 3 kids (inc 1 baby). And a drunk mother..and dh as and when on a weekend.

Did it over 5 days.

Twice in 5 months.

yaddayule · 21/11/2007 14:47

No friends or family for actual move day (they all came round the next day for a nose and a drink .. not to offer to help !)
Ds was one and superglued to me all day anyway.

Removal men did all the heavy lifting and putting stuff in right rooms so it was just a case of opening some boxes, making up the beds and having a takeaway curry.

Elphaba · 21/11/2007 14:47

My Dad and my brothers usually do all the lifting, along with dh. I think my Mum helped unpack but I can't remember - it was a few years ago now. Boys were 3, just 2, 3 months so I must have had help!

No one. Pickfords did all packing etc, wasn't much for us to do.

nailpolish · 21/11/2007 14:51

me, dh and 2 dds aged 4 and 2. did it ourselves. no nursery!

good luck

nailpolish · 21/11/2007 14:52

we moved 90 miles

Fimbo · 21/11/2007 14:53

We have just moved into our new house after 6 months in rented whilst waiting for the house to be built.

Dh moved all our stuff in our Zafira! But we did get a removal company in to move the heavy stuff. He did it over the course of 2 weekends

We have moved twice in 6 months and we had one friend help.....but we saved ourselves a small fortune.

AnAngelWithin · 21/11/2007 14:53

me and dh, with 3 kids in tow, hired a van for the weekend. only moved down the road though lol.

dooley1 · 21/11/2007 14:58

it would be nice to do it over a weekend or a few days but it all has to be done on moving day and is stressing me right out!

Am about to move and am really curious to know
When you say the movers "did all the packing", do you literally mean they emptied your knicker drawer and packed the contents of the fridge? If not, where was the line dran iyswim?

LIZS · 21/11/2007 15:06

er noone !

Our packers left stuff in many of the drawers and taped them shut. I did pack my knickers etc in a bag thgouh !

mumblechum · 21/11/2007 15:08

No, they didn't pack my knickers individually!

The most important bit we found was the kitchen stuff (they wrap each glass, cup etc individually) and things like paintings, lamps etc.

With bedroom furniture, they'll break them down as much as poss, eg with my dressing table they removed the mirror part and wrapped it, then took out each drawer, put paper on top of each, taped them up then moved the body of the dr.table, mirror bit and drawers seperately and put them together again at the other end.

breadgirl · 21/11/2007 15:15

Dh had 6 of his friends round to help on the actual day so we didn't have to hire removal people.
My parents looked after the kids.
My sis came round to the new house to help with hoovering and general cleaning.

dooley1 · 21/11/2007 15:24

oh yes getting them to do all the packing sounds bliss...
I'm so fed up of cardboard boxes and parcel tape I'm dreaming about them in my sleep even!

Was ill when last moved - had to time move for what would be the 'best' day of the 2 weeks due to treatment - so we had help packing from removals - paid them to pack everything, although we did manage to get some stuff in boxes before they came, and moved all musical instruments ourselves. They didn't bother with the removing of drawers - just picked up large, heavy, antique chest of drawers full between 2 of them and put on van (upstairs to upstairs too!)

glenthorpe · 24/11/2007 12:11

Moved ourselves.Got friends round the day before, packed up,then bought every one a chinese meal,it was great, friends loved it!
Did do some packing of books before (32 boxes).Took a box in the car with toilet roll ,(essential),mugs, kettle, tea, coffee and milk.
Boxes were got from the local school canteen for quite a few weeks before.
