Artex or smooth celings?

DSs room is being replstered and I don't know what's better, smooth or artex. I always thought artex was the norm, but watching DIY type programmes it seems smooth is 'in'. What would you have?

Artex is unbelievably naff.

Slubberdegullion · 15/11/2007 11:50

artex is deeply deeply horrid. please go smooth.

happystory · 15/11/2007 11:52

We inherited a LOT of Artex and it is foul. And to get rid of it you really have to have it replastered.

Whoever thought of it ought to be shot.

SMOOOOOOOOOOOOTH!!!!!

SMOOTH

My MILs house is completely artexed - walls and ceilings. It is shite.

LadyOfWaffle · 15/11/2007 11:54

Really? My mums house is a new build and that has artex. I better get him to smooth it then before he puts up the coving (hmm, coving - good/bad?) I have never actually seen a smooth ceiling. Someone went mad in this house with it, it's all over the livingroom walls aswell. DSs room is better though, it's the artex done in swirls (is that still artex?)

blimey!

MrsBadger · 15/11/2007 11:56

artex in swirls is better?!

moljam · 15/11/2007 11:57

eurgh swirls is worse.

LadyOfWaffle · 15/11/2007 11:57

looks better than the painting with huge grains of sand affect in the living room. Wow, I must be living in the dark ages!

Well, in our bedroom they obviously couldn't afford to plaster with atrex... so they have artex effect wallpaper on the ceiling!!!

smooooov

mrsmalumbas · 15/11/2007 11:59

Smooth - Artex looks dated and cobwebs and stuff stick to it.

My MIL has the entire upstairs of her house artexed, walls AND ceilings. It is horrific. No wonder she can't sell her house!

LilRedWG · 15/11/2007 11:59

SMOOTH every time!!!!!

We inherited artex swirls between fake beams in our late '70s house! Our ceiling is now lovely and smooth

happystory · 15/11/2007 12:00

We had swirls, waves, blobs, fan shapes, you name it....

chopchopbusybusy · 15/11/2007 12:03

Ceilings in new builds are often atrtexed because it takes longer to do a smooth finish. 'Tis still shite though.

brimfull · 15/11/2007 12:09

my sil and bil got their living room -walls- and ceilings artexed ..this was in the 90's but still.
I was gob smacked, but suppose it did sort of match the rest of their horrendous decor
Still can't believe they managed to sell that house.
