Modernising Staircase

I would really love to modernise the look of my staircase. At the moment is is horizontal white wood which has been painted many times. I like the look of stairs which have either wood or chrome looking bannister and glass inserts. Has anyone done this themselves or did you have someone do it for you? Do you feel it was worth it?

We used stair box for oak and glass stair case to replace out 70s one. Love it. Got a carpenter for 1 day to fit it which was 150 (and give us measurements to make the correct order).

I had bannisters like you and did a very similar job to @mareep.
DIY job over a weekend and all the stuff from B and Q. Not difficult at all and makes the house look cleaner and brighter and more open.
