How would someone escape in a fire from your loft room?

Does anyone have one of those ladders you could use in an emergency? Dd1 has recently moved up there (she is nearly 16). She is happy but worried re fire safety and I must say I am too. Anyone got any recommendations?

My brothers had one of those rope ladders with hooks on the end to clip onto the velux window. They used to use it when they were secretly drinking as teens and try to climb down past the parents' room without waking them. They never made it.

We spoke to a local fire company (that do all sign offs for businesses) and they also said the ladders are dodgy.
They recommended getting either wired in or radio controlled linked detectors and the correct types of fire extinguishers installed, so that you can hear when you need to escape and make a path if needed.

I have arranged for a fire officer to come and look round our house and advise. Great suggestion. Thank you

Building regs are that there has to be a fire door at the bottom of the stairs but you could make a landing with another fire door at the top to give more protection.
