soundproofing success stories?

anyone had any joy soundproofing their pad? having last week moved from a victorian semi to a 1961 semi I'm shocked about the amount of noise coming from next door.

they have the tv on in their bedroom into the early hours - I took my earplugs out at 0245 on sunday morning to realise their tele was still on.

Then, the saturday after we moved in, they were making luuuurve, very noisly.

they rent the accommodation so I don't feel like I want to bring it up with them. It's a bit of a negative first thing to start chatting about - having said that, she came to my door the day after moving to ask if my car was parked outside her house... she did explain that she needed to park out front as she was a freelance gardener but none the less...

I had the same shock after moving from a solid Victorian terrace to a 1960's house. We are lucky to have lovely neighbours, but the walls are so thin that we can hear their telly, hear sneezing, laughing ect.Luckily nothing else though!

I looked into sounproofing, but because of the way houses were & still are constructed,it wouldn't work.Apparently, the inner walls are made of breeze blocks, which are low density & actually allow sound to travel. So putting up soundproofing on a party wall would make no difference due to the noise travelling through to the other walls.

Try this experiment-go to the opposite side of the house to the part wall & put your ear against it.Chances are that tyou can hear it just as clearly there.

I don't notice the noises from next door so much now,but at first I was horrified-I had no idea that houses could be so noisy.

oh, great...

they were having a humungous argument last night when I took ds to bed. ds though, wouldn't let me be nosey and forced me to continue reading his bedtime book so I don't know what that was about.

thanks for your input though. will pass onto dh.
