2 ovens or a micro/ oven combi thing?

New kitchen. Do I get 2 ovens and then find somewhere to have a microwave or do I get one oven and a microwave/ combi thing. We'd be going for Neff, eye line if it makes a difference?

Pros of 2 ovens:

  • it's 2 actual full size ovens.

Cons:

  • need to put a a microwave somewhere, second oven gets minimal use (Christmas and parties mainly).

Cons of micro/combi thingy - they don't work so well I guess?

I've got a neff oven with a combi microwave and warning drawer next to it. Combi works fine as both an oven and a microwave and it keeps the worktop clear. Combi looks like an oven inside. Doesn't have a turntable.

*warming drawer

Same as @nomdeguerrrr. It works really well for us, gives us flexibility

We had this very debate and went for 2 ovens.

Main reason was the microwave/ grill combos have quite a poor write up. I use both appliances a lot and didn't want to sacrifice 2 good ones for one not so good.

We'd also have to have a warning drawer to make it symmetrical and I doubt I'd use it much.

The 2 ovens look super cool next to each other. No idea where the microwave is going though lol

2 full size ovens and a microwave! The combi ovens are small and you can't really use the microwave aspect after using the oven aspect as it's so hot. We had one when we had an Aga (switched to an induction range) and I was glad to get rid of the combi and get a normal microwave (they are also hard to clean as the food is so close to the ceiling that if you roast something in it the tubes get dirty). And if you are using the combi as a microwave you would have to manage with just one oven which is a real pain.

Another thing to note... we had two Panasonic combi ovens pack up in 4 years. I don't think the two technologies work well in one unit.

We have gone for “slide and hide” pyrolytic ovens. You might want to look at making one oven a steam oven? I did and decided against it, but it is worth a look.

Yes, one will be an N90 steam S&H I'm just debating the other.

We unfortunately don't have room for the microwave in a cupboard, unless it is in the utility room, but that seems a real faff. but I really, really don't want it on the side. We definitely don't have space for 2 ovens and an integrated micro.

Definitely recommend 2 full sized ones, I am surprised at how often we use both full sized ovens at the same time, and a combi just wouldn't do. We have that oven, though to be honest we barely ever use the steam function and we could have done without it and I really don't think it was worth the extra money. It is the spare one, and we much prefer our standard Neff S&H. Our microwave is in the utility and that works fine for us, I don't find it a faff at all but then our utility is directly off the kitchen.

I replied on the other thread about hide and slides, I have a single with a combi above

I read all the reviews and felt that the cost of a neff one wasn’t acceptable given the reviews which were poor regarding quick failure

In the end I went with an own brand one that matches my hide and slide but only cost just over £100

2 and a half years later it’s still going strong and is in constant use

One quick tip I would give you is to buy at least one more shelf for your oven, it makes life sooo much easier

Acovic · 22/03/2021 19:03

I have a 60cm oven with a 45cm combi microwave above it.

I agonised for ages about going for a steam combi.

I use my microwave a lot though so I think I made the right decision. I love the idea of steam cookery but I'm not sure the reality would be so great for me.

I don't often cook for a lot of people so the 45cm oven is plenty as a second space. I've only used it a couple of times as standalone oven but do use it regularly on a combined program to do baked potatoes!

Africa2go · 22/03/2021 19:45

2 full size NEFF ovens here too, eye level. As a pp said, use them both quite regularly. Also have the microwave in the utility, its directly off the kitchen (7 or 8 steps) - don't really use it that often other than DH&DS use it for porridge in a morning!

weasle · 22/03/2021 21:18

We are having a double oven and a wall cabinet mounted microwave.
If I had unlimited space I think a normal microwave in a larder or pantry would be best like PP above. Cheaper to replace a standard one than built in.

Phalarope · 22/03/2021 21:23

We have a Neff microwave/oven thing. It’s really good. We use the microwave every day plus it’s got a plate warmer setting we use a fair bit. Only really use it as a second oven at Xmas, and I don’t think I’ve ever used the grill function.

I am endlessly pleased by not having a microwave on the work surface when I only really want to warm milk for coffee or defrost leftovers.

HedgeOwl · 22/03/2021 21:27

How much do you use the microwave? We have ours in the utility so it’s not taking up space and it works well for us.

didireallysaythat · 22/03/2021 22:42

We have an embarrassing wealth of ovens. We have the Neff microwave but we use it quite a lot as an oven as well (it gets to temporature really quickly as it's smaller so if you're cooking something that fits on one shelf I use it instead of a main oven).

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 22/03/2021 22:46

I have a combi and a big single fan oven. Both Bosch. Happy with it.

QuantumWeatherButterfly · 22/03/2021 23:52

We had this exact debate and went for 2 full size slide and hide ovens, plus an integrated microwave in a wall cabinet. I don't regret that choice at all. I love having all that oven space, and the microwave is used multiple times daily. Our kitchen isn't massive so it was a big decision as it cost us a decent amount of storage space.
