Summerhouse/office as a room

Does anyone have a summer/house home office type thing that they have converted into a liveable room? Just wondered if you had a pic maybe 😁 but wanted to get an idea on what size to go for it's either 10x 8 or 8x8 I'm looking at do you think that would be a sufficient size? Thanks

I don't think they are massively cheaper than an extension the same size, could be wrong though. Watching with interest as we need something similar.

What do you mean by liveable?

Maves · 21/03/2021 16:15

It's just for the time being as will extend, liveable I mean the odd night slept in and room for tv etc sofa bed....obviously it will be insulated electrics etc and no the structure is 7-900 obviously the extras will be more.

For my son not going to be renting it out to ransoms

Glad to hear kidnappers wont be using it.

By the letter of the law, I think you need planning permission if anyone is to sleep overnight.

I would say a home office is different to a summer house though. Do you have a picture of the building you’re thinking of starting with?

My dd lives in a converted summerhouse. She loves it, cost a few thousand to insulate, do flooring cladding and new roof but she's very happy to have her own space x

Pics of her room before her bed went in x

Sorry to hijack the thread @iusedtohavechickens , but could you tell me how big this space is?

Maves · 21/03/2021 20:47

....@iusedtohavechickens that looks like an actual extension! It's big. I'm not bothered about planning permission as it's more just a chill space but he can sleep in it when he wants, there wouldn't be an issue with planning anyway. Thousands to insulate etc mmmm have added picture

Electricity? Toilet?
8x8 will be tiny - enough for a single bed and a chest of drawers maybe, not much else. If you are using it as an occasional bedsitting room (which is a change of use and may well require permission by the way) you'd want 10x12 minimum I'd say.

Maves · 21/03/2021 23:32

No toilet electrics yes...it will just be an extra room like an extension to his bedroom but in the garden, sofa bed tv gym bits.

We have a Summerhouse which is 8x12. It has a chest of drawers a table and three comfy chairs and a small table a step for plants. I don’t think you would want less than this. Ours is insulated but has no electric as it is down the bottom of the garden.

tanstaafl · 22/03/2021 10:37

Looking to use it all year round OP?

The challenge is getting enough insulation into the roof and walls ( I think the floor is too thin but maybe the PIR type insulation could go under ) without taking up too much internal space.

The windows and doors aren’t glass and single pane , they’ll always be a cold spot.

My gut feeling is for that summerhouse you’d be spending a few thousand and never quite getting it insulated enough.

Maves · 23/03/2021 09:30

Thanks that's helpful didn't realise insulation would be so expensive probably wouldn't use in the freezing winter, but wanted a chill out space that he could sleep in occasionally if he wanted. May have to rethink though and Judy use it as a summer house Confused
