Stairs & Regulations - replacing carpet with hardwood

I need some advice please!

I'm removing carpets from my current staircase and planning to lay hardwood, which matches the rest of the house. Carpenter has done one of the stairs as a sample and it looks great!

However, I'm a bit concerned about the regulations. Upon doing some research I see that the going should be minimum 220mm: as indicated here. My current staircase doesn't satisfy this regulation even in its current form (it's a period property), and I am wondering if this will cause problems if I do any alterations to it.

Has anyone had any experience with renovating their stairs and regulations?
