Semi with garage or detached no garage

Just out of interest I wondered what would be the most common choice to go for.

Both same price, both new builds, both 3 beds with similar sizes.

The detached a nicer layout downstairs close to a nice field and park (can see from lounge window), 3 off road parking spaces. Village closer to the major city with good school catchment. Not overlooked garden.

Semi has a bigger front and back garden (overlooked at back), garage. Village location but further out by 5-10 mins.

Detached. You can't pay enough for quiet and private.
With 3 parking spaces could you fit in a carport/lean-to for some kind of outside storage?

minipie · 17/02/2021 16:59

I’d go for the detached no garage, especially with better location and non overlooked garden thrown in as well.

I don’t see the point of garages except as storage and for that, you could get a shed.

Chihuahuacat · 17/02/2021 16:59

The detached 100%. In my experience garages just end up dumping grounds for crap.

KihoBebiluPute · 17/02/2021 17:02

Given that it's new-build I would go for detatched, because new-builds have terrible sound insulation and the walls might as well be paper. But I wouldn't buy a new-build.

If choosing between houses that were built before building standards plummeted through the floor, I'd rather have the garage (but it would be a workshop/pottery studio/excercise space, not a boring old place for keeping a car!)

WisestIsShe · 17/02/2021 17:05

Detached! There's nothing as annoying as neighbors Wink

happytoday73 · 17/02/2021 17:05

I'd go for a detached with no garage... Won't happen for us as husband needs double garage for his hobby...

You can just have shed for garden things...

RoseMartha · 17/02/2021 17:06

Detached

OnTheBenchOfDoom · 17/02/2021 17:06

Detached because of not having a shared wall and the not overlooked aspect too.

Do you have a garage at the moment? What do you store in it and could you store that stuff at the new house? Is there room for a shed in the garden?

IthinkIm · 17/02/2021 17:07

Detached. No brainier

DinosaurDiana · 17/02/2021 17:07

Detached every time.

emmathedilemma · 17/02/2021 17:08

Detached, you can add storage space such as a shed or garage.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 17/02/2021 17:09

Detached.

fussychica · 17/02/2021 17:16

Detached every time. I would never, ever move to a semi again out of choice. The detached sounds much nicer in terms out outlook etc anyway.

GrumpyHoonMain · 17/02/2021 17:21

Detached as long as the other houses don’t have garages. Also bear in mind that with new builds ‘field views’ tend to be temporary - they probably just haven’t applied for planning permission yet.

Raera · 17/02/2021 17:23

Another vote for the detached house

CallmeAngelina · 17/02/2021 17:29

Detached 100%.

Comefromaway · 17/02/2021 17:31

Detached and buy a shed

littlesheepdog · 17/02/2021 17:37

I would say detached. Although when we converted a garage in our old house and ended up with no garage we really struggled to sell it. Even with 2 off road spaces.

PinotNoisette · 17/02/2021 17:39

Does the detached have room for a shed (or two) in the garden? Our garage is absolutely full, I've no idea where we would put all the stuff if we didn't have one. We don't have a loft though, which would help with some stuff but not all the gardening tools etc.

oohmyback · 17/02/2021 17:50

I would get the one with the garage kit that's because we use our garage. Up until
A couple of months ago we had a classic mini in there and now have a Harley Davidson. Also about 50 push bikes (exaggeration obviously but a lot!)

But if you don't use your garage as a garage and just need storage then go for the detached.

Although I have a new build which is a semi and have no problems with noise.

Evecob · 17/02/2021 17:51

The detached has a smaller garden but not sure by how much. It has 2 sheds in it already

I’ve only got to read one of the hundreds of noisy neighbour threads on here to say definitely detached.

Oblomov21 · 17/02/2021 18:31

Detached. I would never buy a new build though. Paper thin walls. Your'll need it to be detached to save from hearing next door in a new build a emi.
