Have you had your kitchen done recently?

Just that really. Have had a kitchen done before with Howdens and an independent fitter. We don't know any fitters recommended in our local area so thought we'd go to Magnet for all. The price they have quoted in their 'sale' is insane. Average handleless units, laminate worktop and sourcing our own appliances. £6k to fit the kitchen. Units £10k after 50% off- kitchen is medium sized, no island or anything like that

We are South East London and don't know any independent showrooms/fitters. Got a quote from the one recommendation we got but their communication was dire.

Urban Myth in Chingford did ours recently.

Dogsanddrums · 24/01/2021 21:34

We have just had a medium size Howdens kitchen fitted, the kitchen cost £6000 including appliances, Shaker doors and oak worktops. Our previous kitchen was about £3000 from B&Q (much smaller) but Magnet quoted £10000, so we didn’t even bother going to them this time. They are extortionate! Can you put the job on MyBuilder to find a local fitter?

TowandaForever · 24/01/2021 21:37

@Dogsanddrums how much was the fitting?

Dogsanddrums · 24/01/2021 21:47

Fitting was £1250, 5 days labour. The units were flat packed so we assembled ourselves ready for the fitter, but that only took us about a day

Smallgoon · 24/01/2021 21:49

£6k to fit the kitchen seems a bit steep - why so expensive? Are they just fitting or is it a one stop shop whereby they will sort electrics and all plumbing too? Still seems expensive to me. I paid under circa £1700 to have mine fitted and I'm in SE London.

Dogsanddrums · 24/01/2021 21:51

These prices were in Surrey so not sure if London would be slightly higher labour rates

Whatpaint · 24/01/2021 22:12

Interesting kitchen fitting quotes. We have a medium/large kitchen and quoted £3,500 for fitting by Wren. A friend used a local fitter and paid similar.
We are East Midlands so not an expensive area. The quotes here are good, make me determined to. Shop around a bit more!

NeurologicallySpeaking · 24/01/2021 22:12

Hmm seems like they are trying to fleece us then. The price of yours @Dogsanddrums is what we were expecting to pay really. A little more as the units are not flat packed and need to have plumbing and electrics for it all (although more or less just replace existing appliances tbh)

Smallgoon · 24/01/2021 23:21

@NeurologicallySpeaking How large is the kitchen? How many units roughly?

NeurologicallySpeaking · 25/01/2021 06:36

It's been done v weirdly so at the moment I think it is 12 units but lots of small ones.

Do you have a local FB group? Recommendations locally could help

TenThousandSpoons · 25/01/2021 08:12

Magnet gave us the most expensive quote. Try Wren or Wickes.

Yes we do but there seems to be a bit of a dearth of kitchen fitters! I have posted but get lots of people following and then a few recommending the co they work for which isn't helpful

We had our kitchen done by Magnet last September and they were cheaper than Howdens by miles! I'm in West London. We got our own fitters, but I think they quoted £2.5-3k for the fit?

kirinm · 25/01/2021 09:47

You could get a carpenter to do it? We bought our kitchen from DIY Kitchens. DP did most stuff but we had a chippy help with the worktop and other bits and bobs.

Hmm did you have to bargain them down hard? The price is so far off the budget (we agreed together!) that I'm wondering if this is an opening gambit?!

We have 0 skill so need old kitchen taken out, plus appliances wired in (no plumbing changes or anything)

We went with a local kitchen shop a friend recommended. Much cheaper than magnet, same price as howdens but much better quality.

Therealone · 25/01/2021 11:29

We're quite fast or in south west London.

Therealone · 25/01/2021 11:30

FFS!! Far out obviously

Smallgoon · 25/01/2021 13:00

Why aren't you hiring a carpenter to do it? Surely the likes of Magnets/Wren etc mark up the fitting cost. I purchased my kitchen from DIY kitchens (£4k for units) and then paid a carpenter to fit.

ScarletZebra · 25/01/2021 13:23

We bought a Wren kitchen intending to DIY with help. Ended up getting a kitchen fitter off checkatrade. Hadn't realised Wren aren't designed for DIY and DH couldn't do it.

We needed electrics and plastering and plumbing as well and didn't have a socket for the hob when we took out the old one. Huge job, not just replacing what was there but total remodel. Fitters charged just over £3k and earned every penny.

Wren fitters wanted over £2k for a dry fit - basically getting everything out of the boxes and putting it in place, no electrics or plumbing.

TaleOfTheContinents · 25/01/2021 13:45

@Therealone please could I have the name of the local kitchen shop you used. Thanks Smile

Therealone · 25/01/2021 23:29

I've pm'd you @TaleOfTheContinents.

Linguaphile · 26/01/2021 07:11

We had a Next 125 kitchen fitted a few years ago and it is fantastic. Poggenpohl level design and quality but at a Schuller price. There are a few retailers in London, but this place might be worth looking at: www.londonkoncepts.com/

XmasBelle · 26/01/2021 07:22

Magnet double the cost of a fitter. I went independent as I know a fitter. £1800 for nearly 2 week's work. He was excellent and I would recommend you find an independent fitter or a smaller one man band shop
