Saniflo - anybody got one?

I'm looking to create an en suite shower room in my house. There's an existing room but, for various reasons, it does not have a loo in it. Digging a waste pipe would be prohibitively expensive so we're looking at Saniflo on the advice of the plumber and builder we've engaged for the job.
Does anyone have a Saniflo system? Any good? Anything annoying about it? I've heard that they can be noisy and some alarming tales about excessive loo roll...

OK, since it's 'Satan, thy name is Saniflo' - are there alternatives? Who's got an en suite with no loo in? It's not a deal breaker really. Just a bit odd to have sink etc.

So glad you've seen the light about shit-shredders, as our plumber called them.

I don't think any previous posters have so far mentioned the issue of...

Suck back?

Contrary to everyone else here; we have had saniflos since 2008 in our old house (loo only) and this one (basement shower, washing machine and loo all drain through saniflos). In those 12 years we have had 2 engineer call outs. The big son does huge poos which sometimes block our ordinary loo but thus far the saniflo has handled them manfully. We do have strict instructions that the basement loo is only for wee, poo and loo roll. Who are all these people flushing random household items?

That's good to hear, actually.

I don't know about the flushing random household items -- I suspect that, even with people you know aren't randomly flushing tampons and cotton buds, there may be vast discrepancies in how much toilet paper people routinely use?

I don't think you can have an en-suite with no loo in it. Are you really sure you can't run a waste pipe somehow? Or put the ensuite somewhere else? Or choose a different bedroom as the main bedroom and nick a bit of another bedroom for an en-suite where you can run proper pipes? I would honestly not have an en-suite if I had to have a Saniflo again...

We had one in a shed type structure at the end of a 60ft garden. Shower, basin and toilet all go through it. Only issue we had was when it was turned off at the switch and the sink was run, backed up into the shower. Mostly used by me and DP or my sister only, except once a year when we had a big party and everyone used it. Granted visitors for a party aren't likely to faffing with cotton buds and we had a sign saying no sanitary items down it but no problems.

Separately I think an en-suite with no toilet would be my preferred type if had to have one.

We’ve got one in an ensuite which is shared by 2 children. Had it for almost 9 years and never had a problem with it.

Update - I checked and mine appears to be a grundfos jobbie (pun intended), not saniflo. Anyway, no problems with it.

Matildatoldsuchdreadfullies · 19/01/2021 19:38

I had (past tense) 2 saniflos. They both burned out. Getting rid of them was a BIG job (no pun intended). I would never purchase a house with a saniflo, no matter how perfect it was in every other regard.

We've got a saniflo, never had a problem and it's been there 10+ years. Doesn't get used all that much though as the flush is so noisy.

Ours has emptied waste through the kitchen ceiling twice.I had to pull the light fitting out to stop the ceiling collapsing and the waste ran down my back. It's currently disconnected as it's as dead as a dodo. Only DH uses it for shower and loo, so no tampons or anything else. It's a bloody nightmare, usually I'm the one who cleans it. Only one local plumber will deal with them and he can name his price. I wish we could just get rid of it.

I had it in a rental for 10 years. Needed the macerator changed twice because the tenants guest put face wipes down. Other than that it was fine.

I've found another solution now though because any problem does get one rather up close and personal with poopies
