Talk to me about lighting in a new kitchen please

We're replacing our 20+ year old kitchen and lighting technology has moved on in that time!

I would like really clear well light work surfaces but don't really want to be able to see the fixtures like you do in some kitchens. We have LED overhead but I want to ensure the kitchen is lit in the best way. It's a handleless white gloss kitchen. Five 900 high wall cupboards (600, 500, 500, 800, 600) with extractor in between. Rest are base units then oven stack with larder and fridge.

I most definately DID NOT want to be able to see the under cupboard lighting fixtures.

Will you be having a lighting pelmet?

I went either strip lighting.
I was going to get a diffuser holder for the strips but the electrician said it wasn't necessary.
Strips went up, stuck pointing downwards just behind the lighting pelmet and I had 2 immediate issues with it.

  • you could see the pinpoints of light on the worktops rather than just a general wash of light.
  • because they went pointing down and the lighting pelmet stopped the light going forward there was a clear demarcation between the back half of the worktop (well lit) and the front half (not lit).

I ordered the diffuser holder.

Initially tried it at the back (where cupboard meets wall) to overcome the light demarcation issue. This worked but had the further issue that I could firstly see the lights and secondly see the pin points within the defuser.
Then tried the diffuser in the original place. This works fine. Because of the defuser you can't see pinpoints of light on the worktop, and the impact of both the diffuser and the fact that the lighting strip is in it a 45° (so pointing back towards the wall rather than straight down) overcome the half lit aspect.

Pictures show the half lit issue (one with no light over oven) and now (all lit one).

The screenshot of the product looks very similar to what I brought.

LED downlighters for the room, pendants over any island and LED strip lights under cabinets

Thanks both, especially @Chasingsquirrels - that's really helpful. Nice kitchen too!

No pendants over island as we have velux windows above.

Yes, will have lighting pelmet under cupboards.
