Am I mad to consider changing a broken bathroom pull light switch myself?

Bloody thing has broken. It doesn't click anymore. Literally a day or two before lockdown. Downstairs bathroom right next to glass front door so can't leave door open for light Grin in the evening.

We've lived with it for a bit. But how hard is it to change it myself? I've bought a new pull switch. I know to turn power off and I've wired a plus before.... however, I am useless at DIY in general. But also even more useless at getting anyone in to actually do stuff. I end up doing it myself eventually.

Has anyone done it?

Yes. Just triple check your power is off. Take pictures of how it’s currently wired in and triple check you’ve wired it back in correctly.

You may find when you undo the cover that the string has just disconnected from the unit, so could be an easy fix.

Just had to do this recently. Very straightforward. The only thing I wish I'd done differently was carefully run a knife around the dome bit on the ceiling (if that's how yours is). Various layers of built-up paint pulled away from the ceiling when I took mine off.

Dh did ours, but after a while it stopped working. Electrician said one of the wires was pinched. Whoops.

Youtube is all you need.

I am not very handy and I did it during the first lockdown. I wasn't sure that the switches were labelled correctly in the fuse box (or whatever it's called now) so I turned all the power off. It was really simple, I spent longer finding a scewdriver than it took to do it. I watched a video and took a photo of the original wiring before I took the old one off.

Thanks all. A job for next weekend...maybe 😱. I need to clear out the cupboard with the circuit breaker box in.

Good tip about the knife and breaking the paint seal. Mine has been replastered about 2 years ago so it may be an issue. It's a 50s house so I'm guessing the wire colours may have changed? Already got my mini screwdrivers ready Wink
