Valspar colour mix paint or dulux?

Hello

I can’t afford farrow and ball paint but like the ammonite colour. Would you use the b&q valspar paint mixing service to get an approximate colour , or just buy dulux or similar?

Thank you !

I got a sample of F&B ammonite from Valspar and it was a great match! Personally I prefer Valspar to paint with than F&B and get the premium one as we have a little person who makes a mess!

We ended up going with a Valspar own colour which is amazing!

Didn't a raft of people have problems with Valspar smelling fishy?
I'm sure I read that on here. They may have rectified the issue since, mind...

XH was a decorator and did loads of rooms in ammonite. It was his favourite shade and often recommended it. He used to get it matched by Johnson’s at the local decorating shop.

Gunpowder · 24/10/2020 18:08

I’ve had ammonite (which I love) matched with both Valspar and Johnstone’s. The Johnstone’s was loads better and I would say practically the same as the F&B modern emulsion. The Valspar texture seemed a little bit off to me? I’m picky though.

If you don’t want to colour match have a look at the Dulux Heritage colours which I think are gorgeous, very F&B. Although don’t know if there’s a dupe for Ammonite.

Gunpowder · 24/10/2020 18:10

Sorry have to add that the room I did in Valspar ammonite colour match was in 2015, so it could be better now!

TobyHouseMan · 24/10/2020 18:39

Use Johnstone’s - they have the paint codes for every F+B paint and the match is 100%

My experience with ValSpar was not good - they screwed it up twice before giving me my money back.

We are just decorating with Valspar. We have gone with the V700 washable and durable, and it has been great so far. Covers and goes on well, and no fishy smell.

Oh gosh I got a voucher from here for Valspar and painted my dining room around 3 years ago. The whole house smelt like cat pee and had to get it professionally skimmed and redecorated to get rid of it. Truly awful.

I don’t know if they’ve resolved the issue, but I would never use them again.

Africa2go · 24/10/2020 23:05

Valspar is awful paint (just Google it).

GiraffeNecked · 25/10/2020 05:49

We used valspar recently. It’s fine now, they fixed it.

Goldensunnydays81 · 25/10/2020 05:53

I used valpasar a couple of months ago and it was awful 6 coats and it was still patchy and just didn’t go on nicely in the end had to get a dulux and go over the top with one coat and it was fine.

DangoDays · 25/10/2020 05:59

Got valspar in fb setting plaster for lounge/ diner. Am no painting expert but it looks great, nice and even, and no odd smells. teddy that is awful!

Bluntness100 · 25/10/2020 06:01

I colour matched F&L french grey in Valspar 700 in thr matt, ans it is a perfect match, as F&b is also creamy and matt. I’m about to do the living room in pigeon, in the same paint, it’s also a perfect match.

However I’d say two things, it dries quickly so if you go over the area when it is not quite dry it can lift thr paint off and it needs two coats.

It is not quite odourless like they say, but the smell is very mild. It’s not unpleasant as such.

Clearly many people do it, as they have all the colours on file on their computer, you don’t even need the colour card. You just say f&b pigeon and they mix it.

Firepitnights · 25/10/2020 06:03

I used Valspar last month. Great coverage. It took 2 coats over a wall that was the same colour as the one on the left. Now a gallery of family pictures over the generations, but that photo would be too outing!! Went too well and looks great now finished.

I’ve also used Johnson’s for colour matched F&B in the past and really happy with that too. Easy to wipe clean.

I've just painted my whole house using Valspar. No fishy smell at all.

Flamingolingo · 25/10/2020 06:05

I’d also go for Johnstone’s - we’ve done our whole house in their durable acrylic Matt in a range of F&B colours. It looks great!

Africa2go · 25/10/2020 11:02

It isn't just the smell with Valspar which may have been fixed, it's the coverage, particularly with dark / highly pigmented colours. The premium level Valspar seems to get fewer complaints and paler colours don't seem to be affected as badly but my experience was the same as a pps, 6 or 7 coats to try to get round the patchiness of coverage when it dried. It worked out way more expensive than using F&B to start with.

Actually I've since used Little Greene which is more expensive per tin but you actually use less paint.

WhiskersPete · 25/10/2020 11:42

I have tried Valspar once and never again! It was awful. If F&B is out of reach l, try Graham & Brown as it is amazing quality, lovely colours and not quite as pricy. We have done our whole house with it.

Africa2go · 25/10/2020 13:58

colour match

Try this website OP. You put in the F&B colour and it gives you the paint choices that are the closest match. Not a huge range of UK paints but might be useful

NotMeNoNo · 25/10/2020 23:08

I had a couple of bad experiences with Valspar (including the MN test) I now would go for trade paints (Johnston's etc) or Dulux Trade, or F&B/Little Greene for particular colours.

Glitterbubbles · 25/10/2020 23:11

Our whole house is valspar V700 and we are really happy with it

SusieSusieSoo · 25/10/2020 23:21

Don't get Valspar. The problem with the smell it creates hasn't gone away. I have just had the plasterboards replaced in 2 rooms to finally get rid of the smell. Haven't been able to use the rooms for over 2 yrs.

gamerchick · 25/10/2020 23:24

I used valspar last year in one room. The summer smelt like a cat had peed. Then it went away for the winter, this year when it got hot it smelt like a cat had peed.

Nasty stuff, never again.
