Help me find a paint colour for my kitchen!

We’ve just moved into a new house and I’m busting to paint the two plain walls in the kitchen.

Unfortunately, the previous owners picked a mix of warm cream and cool grey counter tops (why?!?), plus some rather “interesting” mirrored mosaics. Altogether, it’s a bollocks to think of a colour that would work well.

I’ve attached a picture to show the mish-mash of colours in the kitchen- the two walls you can’t see are just plain plaster and that’s what I need help with.

Anyone any ideas?

(Please excuse the mess on the island. It’s a Crap Magnet.)

two choices either go creamy tones to tone down the rather loud tiles or go bold and go for a vibrant dark colour to make the floor and units stand out

Change one of the worktops so they match? Not what you asked I know but it might help you pick a colour.

TerribleCustomerCervix · 19/10/2020 15:52

Lamentations- I’d love to change the worktops but tbh the whole kitchen just isn’t my style, so I’m loathe to spend £££ when I know in the medium term I want to rip the whole thing out!

Every time I walk in I just think “WHY?!? Why would you pick two clashing countertops!?“

Can you get rid of the tiles in the short term or is that part of the kitchen refit? It reminds me a bit of a tube station I’m afraid...

My suggestion would be a pink or a forest green.

I’d love to but I’m worried about it being a massive job? I’m a DIY novice and have never tiled but I wouldn’t object to giving it a go.

I wanted to paint them plain white in the meantime to make them a bit less in your face but my sister was adamant that they would look shite.

Tbh I think I’d stick to a white, a light cream, or a pale grey (warm one) as I think anything else might make it look busier. Would you consider painting the piles as a short /medium term measure?

PigletJohn · 19/10/2020 16:01

beige to match the unit doors.

Fairybatman · 19/10/2020 16:01

Tiles, don’t paint your piles Grin

PickAChew · 19/10/2020 16:02

The pink on that bag looks nice with it. Maybe a deep plumif the light is good enough?

ifIwerenotanandroid · 19/10/2020 16:04

I'd recolour the cupboards to grey. No idea how, sorry.

MJMG2015 · 19/10/2020 16:06

I'd have had the tiles off the first weekend 🤣

Laminate work tops are a far cry from the 70''s laminate and you could totally change the look of the kitchen really cheaply.

Personally I'd paint all the walls white the same as the light shafts.

monkeyonthetable · 19/10/2020 16:08

I'd paint those tiles too. You can get special paint to go over tiles. They are too busy in a crowded kitchen.

Teacup34 · 19/10/2020 16:12

Red maybe? Or a light grey. If you do go for a neutral colour you could liven it up with coloured accessories.

TerribleCustomerCervix · 19/10/2020 16:18

Right I’m going to paint the tiles. You’ve persuaded me.

White? Cream?

I’m thinking if I go white then I have a little more freedom with the colour for the plain walls?

I'm the OP's sister. I said painted mosaic tiles look like the embossed paintable wallpaper our dad was obsessed with between 1985 and.....present day.

Interesting you said pink @milienhaus, I thought a pale pink shade would be one of the few colours that could compliment the Frankenstein-worktops.

Fairybatman · 20/10/2020 11:55

If you are painting the tiles you can get a pen to put the grout lines back in. Makes it look much more ‘real’

stancat · 20/10/2020 12:38

Paint the tiles and walls white. Calm the whole place down.

WHY?!? Indeed. We have just bought a house where the previous owners spent a lot of money making really horrid choices 💔

Greensidepark · 20/10/2020 13:53

Go bold. Go pink.
