Custom made walk in wardrobes

Has anyone ever had one made for them? Used a company? I've looked at IKEA pax and it doesn't seem to look sturdy enough and besides, I wouldn't know where to start!

We got our local tradesman to build custom built in wardrobes.
He's hand built them to a design we mapped out together and it's been great.
He's even measured the shoe shelf widths to make sure they fit DH's shoes.

So I'd definitely check out any local tradesmen and carpenters who may be able to build them for you, and they're definitely a lot better price/quality than the high street stores offering the same service.

What was the ballpark cost ?

@IheartNiles
It was part of a wider quote but approx 300-400 for the built in closets total. It included custom design, build, materials, pressure light & wiring for light and all labour (including door planing, sanding, priming, painting etc.)

We just provided the doors and the handles as materials.

Wow that’s. A good price

Ikea PAX is top notch. I can vouch for the quality as we inherited a whole walk in wardrobe system from previous owners at our old house, and when we sold it 10 years later it was still so good our buyers paid us to keep it in. Where it excels is if you later want to turn the space into an ensuite or dressing area you can still use the system as wardrobes - DH installed the whole thing on wheels so it was really easy to pull out but a workman could do it too.

@IheartNiles we ended up doing both bedroom built in closets, so double the price, and the closets aren't massive either. But was very happy as he always does a good quality job. He is our go to tradesman.
So I definitely recommend getting quotes from well rated local tradesmen for work like this to compare to any Sharps or Ikea quotes.

Will do- thanks!

Fab! Thank you - this is incredibly helpful.

I'll have 3 walk in wardrobes to furnish, 2 being in attic eaves so will need some planning. Other than Pinterest, I have no real idea of design. Should I try and carefully plan what I want in there myself or just give a general idea of what I'd like in there?

We had a local carpentry firm fit a row of these in our converted loft master- was pricey but totally worth it. 3 x wardrobes and open shelving in the sloped section. They are so sturdy, so useful and look fantastic. Its really not worth scrimping on this as you will get so much value out of it and stylish, well made built in storage is always attractive to buyers when wanting to sell.

@sundowners if you don't mind saying, roughly how much did your wardrobes cost? We're looking at a very similar height/width and asking our carpenter to quote.

LittleEsme · 15/10/2020 07:19

Beautiful job @sundowners. Thanks for posting the pic.

Did you leave the whole design to them or did you plan it?
