hi

i have had fabric sofa for years and am thinking of chocolate brown leather m & S abbey design. my 2.5 year old is constantly making a mess on the sofa so I am just thinking will leather be better? I like fabric but want something that is going to be practical look nice and last.

Any advice would really be appreciated. thank you

Leather is very tough and you can wipe it clean. Lasts for years too, as long as you care for it. Nuff said!

my new leather one is so much easier to clean than the fabric one was (you must hide all the biros though)

I don't like leather sofas so I got a sofa with a removable, washable cover. It is a natural/cream colour but I have put a couple of throws on it to protect it and all is going well so far! (My dd is nearly 3)

leather definitely but try to get one with fairly straight lines - one of ours has fairly squishy back cushions and they are harder to keep clean

Definately leather. We have chocolate brown leather couches and they're fab and easy wipeable. We've also got rid of the carpet and replaced with oak solid wood flooring as carpets and toddlers don't go either!

We have 2 chocolate brown leather sofas and they are so lovely.
My DD who is 3yo decided this week to colour in one of the cushions with black biro... Luckily it all came off, methelated spirits did the job. DH is none the wiser!
Don't think I could have cleaned a fabric sofa that easily or cheaply.
My vote will always be for leather sofas where toddlers are involved!!

We have choc brown leather
So far it has proved v durable

claricebeansmum · 12/10/2007 13:28

Leather. We have both and the leather fares a lot better than the fabric one which is about to be subject on an insurance claim

newgirl · 12/10/2007 13:29

if you go for leather dont let sharp objects near it otherwise very easy to clean

TrickORTripletEm · 12/10/2007 13:32

Leather definately. I had fabric sofas when my dx3 were babies and it was a nightmare, lets be honest it does tend to soak 'everything' up!!!
When they were three we bought leather ones and they are so easy to keep clean.

confusedotcom · 12/10/2007 13:43

we trying to decide between leather and fabric (although my dc are primary age now). The only problem with the leather is that everyone has them!

mishymoo · 12/10/2007 13:46

We have two choc brown leather sofas and are regularly wiping them clean with a 2 year old in the house! Fabric would be ok if you bought ones with removable covers but that means having a second lot of covers readily available if you need to wash one set, IYKWIM?

somersetmum · 12/10/2007 13:48

leather, definitely.

Have you thought about a leather Chesterfield? They're stylish, comfortable and absolutely indestructible; they even improve with age.

Anna8888 · 05/11/2007 17:38

Loose covers.

We bought a new sofa a few months ago with two identical sets of dark grey cotton velvet machine-washable tumble-dryable loose covers. Stress-free.

LyraSilverSparklers · 05/11/2007 17:38

Leather definitely.
We have had both. With fabric you're forever having to removed all the covers, wash and dry them, pull them back on and they start to look worn out over time.
With leather you just wipe clean and they're as good as new.
The thicker, shinier leather is better for this than the thin soft leather.

ruddynorah · 05/11/2007 17:40

brown leather here too.
