What shall I do with my hallway - decorating help!

Hi
What shall I do with my stairs/hall? It's white now, bright because of Velux x 2 - the front door is about 6 metres behind me in the first image (we have a chalet style bungalow so downstairs is big/long)

I was thinking of some wallpaper or something striking on that wall at the top of the stairs but would it look daft as the whole area up there is so open (see picture 2)

We're having a cream Colour carpet by the way on stairs and at top of stairs landing area
Thanks

A mixture of photos, or pictures, etc up the stairs.

Keep it white put photos etc up

Bluntness100 · 18/08/2020 07:12

The white is very cold and uninviting.

I’d go for a beautiful wallpaper, either down one wall and at the top landing, or just at the top landing, with walls that then tonally match.

Harlequin, Sanderson and little greene do some fab ones.

I’m thinking about redecorating our hallway too. How about some Panelling to visually break up the wall with a slightly darker colour on the panels?

m0therofdragons · 18/08/2020 07:30

I’d keep it white but with accessories, so a lovely warm carpet and pictures on the large wall up the stairs plus a big mirror on the wall at the top. Maybe darker varnish on the wood but not too dark.

Agree with Bluntness.
Pinterest has lovely ideas. I'm in the process of renovating and these are few examples from my "hallway album" lol

Pure brilliant white can look stark. I’d choose more of an off white in a warm tone. I also like stair runners better than a full on carpet. And original artwork on the wall.

Have you tried Houzz for inspo?

Imtoooldforallthis · 18/08/2020 07:37

What about stone cladding on the wall at the top of the stairs, something like this.

I definitely wouldn't wallpaper. It'll look a bit odd in such a big space to just have a bit wallpapered, plus it'll get scuffed the minute you have to get something bulky up or down the stairs.

I'd do a photo wall with some interesting prints from one of those online shops mixed in.

LOVE your light fitting BTW.

Jenniraffe · 18/08/2020 07:45

I loved painted stairs and have just painted mine with dark grey (anthracite) Frenchic paint. Also, pictures and a mirror on the wall will look fab!

Wow there's so lovely ideas here !
Love the painted stairs but don't they chip?
We've already bought the carpet to be honest so it may be next time we decorate now
Love the pictures idea in the stairs as I've got loads so good place to put them all 💕

Don’t have a cream carpet, unless you never wear shoes in the house and have no children.

custardbear · 18/08/2020 08:32

I love the different coloured banister and spindles too 🤩 I'd never have thought of that!

Lol @ALLIS0N it's a bit of a beigy cream to be honest, we've already got it in the kids bedrooms and the room we're currently using as our bedroom and it's been ok ... so far! No shoes allowed in the house and kids aren't allowed food anywhere but the kitchen/dining area

Could you come over here and train my children and husband please ?

weepingwillow22 · 18/08/2020 08:43

I would get a really big mirror to hang on the wall at the top of the stairs. It will really reflect the light back from the veluxes.

Cato31 · 18/08/2020 08:48

Wallpaper would just get rubbed and ripped. Runners look smart, but show all the dirt to the side of the stairs, so it needs hoovering twice a day. The easiest option is a warmer colour of paint and pictures. I'm personally not a fan of photos.

Jenniraffe · 18/08/2020 09:05

I used Frenchic paint on my stairs, spindles and bannisters and it hasn't chipped at all. We don't use shoes on the stairs really, which has probably helped, but overall
I love the look!

AlwaysLatte · 18/08/2020 09:18

We did the pictures thing up the stairs too, although my husband fixed them with a single picture hook and it drives me demented when they end up moving and going wonky. How did you fix yours to the wall?

WhoWouldHaveThoughtThat · 18/08/2020 09:28

@AlwaysLatte - single picture hook! Sad

bravotango · 18/08/2020 09:41

I would do a half wall colour paint job, where you frog tape about 1m up the wall all the way round. An interesting colour below and white above. Clean line and can pick any colour you want (to go with the carpet).

m0therofdragons · 18/08/2020 13:03

I use Velcro wall attachments as you can’t knock them!

JoJoSM2 · 18/08/2020 13:20

I’d be careful with painted stairs as they can be a bit slippery. I’m a bit of a Calamity Jane and have fallen down a few times so we got carpet. But good paints don’t chip. In the last house we used the Farrow and Ball floor paint and it was very good.

AlwaysLatte · 18/08/2020 17:40

Thanks, I will look into the velcro fixings!

Aquamarine1029 · 18/08/2020 17:43

Huge no to wallpaper. I say keep it as light and bright as possible.
