Bath or Bristol?

Trying to find the perfect place to move to. I’m currently in London with young children and debating staying in London but moving to a leafier area, or moving out all together.

Went to visit Bath and Bristol and really like both.

We’re looking for somewhere liberal, maybe a bit arty, great community, and great for kids. Also want good schools and access to lots of green and somewhere safe that is also a fun place to grow up (not boring for teenagers). DH and I both work from home maybe 80% of the time, and the back into London for a day a week.

With that criteria, which would you go for?

Thornbury is lovely it's mine and DHs ideal place to live his grandparents live there beautiful green place but your also close to cribbs causeway so great for children and teenagers and then not far from Bristol city itself.
My DH is from Bristol his family live in various parts but Thornbury is beautiful and worth having a look at.

We sadly can't afford to move to our ideal home in Bristol the prices are crazy for very small houses but as pps have said your budget should be far better than majority moving from London you'll be able to buy a very nice house and still be far cheaper than Bristol.

The schools in Thornbury are very good as well.

People tend to move from London to Bristol initially and then on to the hippy Stroud valleys

Bath,l visited struggled to leave went home, and immigrated back.

l find both Bristol and Bath great cities and as they are both extremely close together it may not matter which one you end up at.

But I'm sure you will find what you are looking for in either city.

Bristol for sure, Bath is too small after London and in normal times too busy with tourists - if you visited now you wouldn't have seen that.
I lived in Bristol for 2yrs after long stretch in London, but had a friend in Bath I visited often - Bristol is chilled but much more interesting and diverse, and liberal. The centre is not great (apart from the \Harbourside) but residential areas aree great - Redland around Whiteladies, or Bishopston for a more earthy feel.

I'd argue Clifton is no less beautiful than Bath (that view around the bridge!) esp architecturally. It's expensive but you can just visit while living in a house with a good garden in Bishopston etc. Green spaces - the downs (Redland and further out on that direction).
Much better for teens.

Actually the coast isn't that near to either! slow trains to cornwall...

and yes, very easy to visit Bath from Bristol - it's about 15min by train!

@Courgetteflower1 well Bristol then bath now not sure! Bath appealed as I like the idea of being on the edge so easy access out to countryside and to see family back over east and into city for culture, and easy to get to train to get back to London. Bristol is much bigger but probably more me. I doubt we'll ever move too scared! I would never leave London if it wasn't for kids. Though I do get the appeal of wanting more wilder and accessible countryside too.

I lived in bath for 11years after being at uni there. Having grown up in a rural area It suited me fine as it's it's just like a big town really. Whenever I visited Bristol though it was like going to the big smoke and felt like it has much more going on than bath.
So if you wanted a continuation of a big city like London I would say choose Bristol but if you want more country life then bath would be the best option

I now live 20 mins from bath and hardly ever visit!

It's really easy to get to the countryside from Bristol and places like the mendips are beautiful. I've just visitedy family there but I wish I had your budget to buy a house there!
