Anyone live in Lewes or Hassocks region? Choosing between the two

Looking to relocate to either Lewes, or the nearby Hassocks area (Ditchling or Hurstpierpoint). We have primary age children.

We think the pros to Lewes are:

  • Amenities, shops & entertainment
  • It’s cool & very pretty
  • Loads to do with kids - bike park etc
  • Accessible
  • Walk to schools & friends

But pros to Hassocks:

  • better schools? (Primary & seconday)
  • more space for £1m budget
  • quieter, yet within a drive of Lewes, and on the trainline to Brighton
  • good for sports? (Eg footie)
  • probably still walk to the local schools/friends as not too remote?

We are looking at state schools, budget around £1m and don’t know the areas so difficult to know what’s best for us!

If anyone knows these regions or has lived in both places I’d like to know where best for a young family for the next 10-15yrs Smile

Go for Hassocks, Hurstpierpoint and the surrounding villages. Much better schools and more property choice.

I know Lewes well. Primary schools hit and miss. Secondary school is good, and some other good choices just a bus ride away. Good choice of private schools near by (including Brighton college). It is very pretty - you won't get many places like that, if that is what you are after. Traffic can be an issue. Good train links. Be aware that if you live in the town, than bonfire night is a huge deal.
