West Ewell opinions

Hi we are looking to move to Surrey and wondered what Ewell West is like in terms of shops and supermarkets. Also would need to be walking distance to the train station for commute to London. Is west Ewell a generally nice area to live? I’ve heard Longmead estate is an area to avoid but how bad is it exactly? How far away from it do you need to be house wise? Any opinions would be greatly appreciated!

Have you been to Ewell? It has a nice, tranquil feel and a few shops but I wouldn’t say it has a thriving high street. For commuting there’s Ewell East and West. If you wanted a bit more of a centre than Epsom has a town centre or you could look at Cheam Village which is one station closer in but has more in the way of retail + other amenities on the doorstep (Nonsuch Park, David Lloyd, leisure centre, tennis, rugby and cricket clubs etc).

I used to work for the Housing Association that owned most of the houses on the Longmead Estate and agree it's an area to avoid.

The rest of Ewell is nice, not exactly the liveliest place but the high street has quite a few decent pubs and restaurants. There's a huge Sainsbury's at Kiln Lane in Epsom.

We drove around a bit when viewing a house yesterday but couldn’t see any shops as such. I think will try more towards Epsom, will check out Cheam village. Thanks!

Thank you! That is really helpful to know to avoid the area. Helps make up my mind a bit about West Ewell.

The village is nice and has shops one needs: Sainsburys, co-op, dry cleaners, coffee shops, nice dress shop and a few others: optician, picture framer, some nice restaurants. But not much. Ewell West goes into Waterloo; Ewell East London Bridge and Victoria.

Steer clear of Longmead (and the Chessington side) as others have said. Depending on your budget, Stoneleigh might be worth a look.

West Ewell is in catchment for two excelle.t secondary schools: Glyn for boys and Roseberry for girls.
