Glass roof for side extension

peterpan765 · 23/07/2020 08:48

We are going to build a side extension on a terraced Victorian house, and looking for recommendations for a glass roof for the side section.

Ideally something that lets in the maximum amount of light and has some vents for air.

We are trying to decide between a flat roof or lantern

Does any one have any experience or recommendations ?

Also had anyone used velux vario ?

Thanks

I personally don't like the look of lanterns so prefer the flat. We are having a side extension at the moment, the roof hasn't been fitted yet but going for something similar to your first picture. Not sure if its Velux Vario but I think Velux are generally good quality, our builders have used them in our loft and they look smart.

There are modern variants of lanterns that looks good and they do give more height inside.

If you get any direct light wheee you are building, then the lantern can be a nightmare as you will get direct sun streaming through and not easy to use blinds. We had a conventional sloping roof with Velux windows which have blinds that can be drawn in the summer months. Not an issue in winter

As a ex-window cleaner, please think ahead about how you will keep it clean & how easy it would be do so.
