Roof Lantern - Pros and Cons

Hello! I've googled the subject extensively and still haven't managed to find enough information to make a decision. My questions are to people who have a roof lantern - do they make the space (usually kitchen extension) too hot in the summer? Is it necessary to have an opening lantern? What about cleaning - inside and out? Any serious downsides to consider? Thank you!

We considered for our extension.

Pro...architect tried to persuade us to have one (found out he had a template design for an extension near us with one). They do look good inside. In addition, if an extension it could mean you go out further with a flat roof as you don't need to worry about roof pitch

Cons. Flat roof. They ALWAYS leak at some point. Much more difficult to fit blinds to block strong sun...and believe me unless you are very overlooked you will need them at points in summer.

We went for a traditional roof with several Velux windows. Great as can close the blinds individually...rarely need all shut. Great ventilation.

Advice: if you go for a traditional roof, don't skimp and get Velux. The roofer told us they have three lines of leak defence and are worth the money. Others can leak and the damage is significant.

Oh spoke by chance to the people near us that had the flat roof extension...they regret it and wish they did what we did

Thank you very much Marie, a lot to take in. We have looked at Velux windows too of course, just worried they would not give us enough light. Will need to revisit all the drawings. We've practically decided on a lantern but I thought I'd do a bit more research. It's all very nice reading about them online and in glossy brochures but actually living with one is the real test. So I wanted some feedback from people who have gone for them and have that experience. Thanks again, thinking cap back on :-).

We had one done when extending

Window cleaner ideas both outside and in every few months

Depends where you are positioning it really. Ours is quite close to bi -folds so gives more light at that end of kitchen, never been too hot as it is not south/west facing

We love ours and wished we went bigger(wider)

Only downside is the number of flies that circle in it when other windows are open in the summer.

Top tip - have it white inside and anthracite on outside with a bluish tiny to glass as makes sky look beautiful and anti glare.
