What's Ryde like to live in, what are the good and stay away from areas?
What's it like using public transport to get around?
Any advice is appreciated

You aren't planning to go to work, then?

whattheactualfuckery · 27/06/2020 12:38

Ummmm when we went to view properties there a while ago, we asked the estates agent what the area was like to live in and his reply really shook us.

“The only thing it’s good for us buying drugs”. Shock

We were saddened for the locals that he said this as we absolutely loved the beach and area.

wewillmeetagain · 28/06/2020 20:39

What @Mydiary said, I have relatives that live in the Isle of Wight and they say exactly the same about Ryde. In fact a lot of the iow is very run down and riddled with drugs.

I know Ryde on the Isle of Wight very well (grew up there) so happy to answer any questions.

Areas around the seafront or towards Seaview are considered nice, but pricier. If you don't mind living a little further out then areas such as Haylands, Binstead or Ashey aren't bad. I would probably avoid Oakfield or Elmfield as they are considered to be 'rough'.

Trouble with the Island is mainly the employment isn't great (seasonal and/or low paid) unless your profession is in public services. The schools are also considered to be poor and below average. There's also the ferries, which are expensive.

I've name changed! I live in Ryde. I've lived in other places on the Isle of Wight and Ryde wasn't my first choice admittedly but I've lived here 3 years now and I love it. 4 beaches close by, a town with free on street parking for 1 hour, small independent shops as well as some chain ones, large Tesco for shopping, local friendly swimming pool. I've joined local social groups and met really lovely like minded women. Yes, there are dodgy areas like anywhere. But I live just outside the main town area and it's quiet and friendly. If you don't mix with the dodgy people then you shouldn't be bothered by them! That estate agent isn't going to be in business much longer with that sales patter!!

I agree with the above poster, avoid Oakfield and Elmfield. But haylands, binstead etc are lovely. And school are really what the student makes it....I've know students do exceptionally well and others make an absolute cock up of exams and the only difference was the amount of personal work and effort put in!

Broadway crescent? Jellicoe?
What's this area like? Good public transport?

Yes reasonable public transport there. However, most people drive on the island as there's lots of places that will be fairly inaccessible without a car.

That particular area of Binstead is just 'okay'. Mixture of current and ex council properties. Close to the secondary school.
