What would you do to this room (with floor plan diagram)?

Moving into a house that has this room in it. It’s a large family room, in an extension, which has two sets of double doors leading to the garden, and a staircase leading up to a bedroom and bathroom above.
There is already a snug room with fireplace and dining room elsewhere (so we don’t need a dining table and chairs in here, for example).

I’m considering using it as an all-purpose living room with floor to ceiling bookshelves along the far left wall (in between the two sets of patio doors) and possibly installing a wood burner in the middle of the top wall.

But what else would you do? Where would you put sofas/chairs? What about the weird section as you come into the room before the staircase?

I’ve tried to draw it vaguely to scale but the staircase prob takes up too much room at the moment. But you get the jist!

All ideas welcome! Smile

Piano on the wall by the door opposite the stairs! (If you or dc ever likely to play!)

@mangocoveredlamb interesting idea... I did used to play many years ago but don’t have a piano at the moment. We have two kids under 10

An office? Desk on the wall between stairs and double doors. Bookshelves on the wall at the end between the two double doors?

Is there space under the stairs to put a cosy reading area?

Comefromaway · 20/06/2020 11:34

Library or music room.

Livingoffcoffee · 20/06/2020 11:34

Could put a second desk on the wall by door into the rest of the house - so it's an office / study area for your DC?

Or just make it the playroom for now?

FiveGensOfLove · 20/06/2020 11:37

I mean, @comefromaway has it spot on - would love to do that. But it is the biggest room in the house, so i feel like it should do more - if that makes sense.

We don’t need it to be an office as we have a study elsewhere. And it’s a really big room so would be a bit echoey as an office or study for the kids...

Oh I definitely wasn't paying attention to the size you clearly put on there...yeah that would be a huge office!

Probably does just need to be a "formal" living space then. Two sofas + a nice wingback chair, some bookshelves, maybe a bar cart. Would be the space I used for entertaining

areallthenamesusedup · 20/06/2020 11:43

Step away from the floor plan and think what the family needs. As your kids get older they will increasingly want their own spaces....the older we all get, the less open plan we go.

Decide what you need in the house then decide where in the house you can do that.

FiveGensOfLove · 20/06/2020 12:06

@Livingoffcoffee a bar cart!! A woman after my own heart. Yes, I think all that sounds sensible. Although it prob shouldn’t be too ‘posh’ right now while the kids are still small.

@areallthenamesusedup that’s really sensible advice. I think we do need a family space for the kids to play, so initially at least that section by the entrance door should have kids toys/drawing table etc for now. Maybe some comfy sofas and bookshelves elsewhere for me to have a reading area.
