Unfortunately just what is says in the title has happened. Just wondering if this is something that would be covered in our house insurance or would it be excluded under "acts of god"?

Depends entirely on your policy. Give them a ring.

You should be covered as it's storm damage/weather related. Any accidental thing could be considered an 'act of god' like when I backed into a tree because a squirrel decided to attack my windscreen wipers.

The whole roof or just the waterproof covering on it? If it’s just the covering (that tarry roll of stuff can’t remember the name that gets nailed onto sheds, garages, even extensions) it only lasts about ten years tops so they will say it’s wear and tear if it’s near or over that age and won’t pay.

That's not an act of god!! Acts of god means natural disasters. Thats the insurance company taking the piss. That's just accidental damage. You would need accidental damage cover to be covered though.
