What colour shall I paint my hallway?

I'm on a mission to paint the halls. Currently it's white (and a bit grubby!). I think I'd like something else on the walls but not sure what.

The downstairs hall has a staircase on one side (the colour will need to go all the way up the stairs onto the 1st floor hall too). There's a lot of wall on the stairs.

I want to put up round wooden coat hooks like these near the front door. But not sure what kind of wood yet so something that'd look good with wood. (Or is that most colours? Grin)

House is a 30s ex-council house, nothing fancy! (Some nice original 30s doors though and a larder! But I'm not painting that).

What colour is your hall?

I'm half tempted to just paint it all white again, but also I think it'd be nice to put at least a bit of colour on it.

How about a light but welcoming pale yellow?

lljkk · 26/05/2020 21:36

We are changing to greens & white for hall, understairs & landing :).
Just ordered the paint samplers this evening.

We had (quickly tiring, dirty, damaged) wallpaper before that. Turns out that under the wallpaper was bright yellow & a sort of pale green, & pinks.

We've just had ours painted in whispering Sage

Hi, is your bannister green too? Been wanting to do something similar but nervous about it

FizzyPink · 26/05/2020 21:50

We’ve just done ours in a really dark blue but only the bottom half, leaving the top half white. I absolutely love it but trying to stop smudging between the blue and white was a total nightmare!

BubblesBuddy · 26/05/2020 22:02

I use Elephants Breath by Farrow and Ball. It goes with everything. It’s a taupe/warm grey. Looks excellently with white woodwork. We have it with oak floors so I’m sure your coat hooks would be great.

FizzyPink · 26/05/2020 22:05

Oohhh that’s a lovely colour @BubblesBuddy I’m looking for something grey for our kitchen and that’s a strong contender

JellyBelly78 · 26/05/2020 23:35

We recently painted ours Duluth Nutmeg White, I love it, looks lovely with white woodwork and it’s a nice warm colour.

JellyBelly78 · 26/05/2020 23:36

Eh, Dulux that should be

eleventy3isthemagicnumber · 27/05/2020 01:09

Thanks for all the replies!

Elephants Breath looks lovely but I'm not even going to look at the prices! Grin Should have said. I'm on a budget!

Dulux Nutmeg White is pretty much along the same lines, isn't it?

(Can you tell which of these is which?)

That sounds gorgeous! If we were going to stay here long term I'd love to go for something bold like that. But we'll probably move in the next few years and I don't want to have to paint over a really strong colour when we do.

I was going to say stiffkey blue which is a farrow and ball lovely dark blue colour which goes beautifully with mango wood/gold etc.

If you don't want something that bold then Blackened is another lovely colour. I'm sure you could get it colour matched.

Baxdream · 27/05/2020 06:07

Our hall is farrow and ball shadow white, it's absolutely gorgeous

eleventy3isthemagicnumber · 27/05/2020 13:41

Stiffkeyblue is absolutely gorgeous! Perhaps in the next house...

Blackend looks nice. Calming, isn't it. (Saw the price by accident Shock Shock Grin). Would def need to colour match!

The shadowwhite's nice too!

I can see I'm going to need some samples.

Has anyone got any recommendations for less crazily expensive but equally gorgeous colours?

We used F&B Cooking Apple Green and I like it a lot - would go with the wood too.

Half our rooms we used F&B and half Valspar premium Matt colour matched to an F&B colour (shock horror!) and while there is a difference in quality of shadow etc and the F&B is nicer, I still love the Valspar colours and it was really easy to paint with ... so I vote colour matching once you’ve found something you like!

Karcheer · 27/05/2020 14:01

My hallway is in Dulux Timeless, it's a great colour, neutral but bright and warm, it goes with all the other colours in other rooms so works well in the hallway.

Baxdream · 27/05/2020 14:08

We got our F & B on offer in Homebase and b and q. It ended up a similar price to dulux

CoralHair · 27/05/2020 14:10

OP you don't need to worry about price. You just find the Farrow & Ball colour swatch card with the colour you like and take it to the B&Q counter to mix it for you in B&Q own brand paint. I do this all the time! Wink

LBB2020 · 27/05/2020 14:12

We have Dulux Egyptian Cotton in our hallway and I love it! We used the matt durable one so I don’t have to worry about grubby toddler handprints and smudges as I can just wipe it all down!

FizzyPink · 27/05/2020 14:39

I really like the Craig & Rose range which they sell in Homebase. I think I paid £40 for a big tub and it’s gone on the walls so beautifully. You can’t see it so well in the hallway but this is the Payne’s Grey which I also used for a wall of our lounge. It’s way too bold for what you’re looking for but I noticed they also do a lovely range of lighter colours

I’m about to paint our hall (3 bed semi) and think I’ve finally chosen farrow and ball’s Sudbury yellow but colour matched by decorating centre. Not 100% sure but figure it’s only paint so if we hate it can always change it 🙈

eleventy3isthemagicnumber · 27/05/2020 22:17

I had an attack of indecision on the B&Q website and have ordered 9 sample pots! Shock

Will have to come up with some kind of craft project for the kids to use up the left overs!

Thanks for the advice everyone. The bolder colours are great inspiration for my next place.

But have gone for neutral tones for this go round due to hopefully selling soonish.
