Painting skirtings question

I think I'm finally going to start painting our bedroom this weekend. I'm not sure what to do about painting the skirtings. They'll need doing, but the carpet is an extremely thick, velvet pile type. I've painted skirtings using a guard to protect the carpets before. I don't think that will work here. What's the best thing to do?

Lift the carpet back.

Yes I've thought of that, was wondering if there was something else I could do.

I'd sort of tuck in a waterproof sheet at the edges if you can, it's worked for me before.

Using masking tape, tape a dust sheet down, just push the pile down so you can get the tape under the skirting. Did ours last month no problem.

Thank you. I looked on YouTube and found a video of wide masking tape being put round the edges and tucked under the skirting board. The problem with taking up the carpet is that it can be difficult to put it back exactly as it was, you have a trip hazard to negotiate and the gripperrods can damage the carpet when you take it up.

Get the sticky plastic sheeting. Its by far the best way to protect the carpet IMO

I painted the hall, stairs and landing just before Christmas and didn't want to lift the stair carpet, so did the masking tape tucked in thing, as in the video you found. I was apprehensive, but it was fine. Don't use cheapo masking tape though - it's a false economy.

(I wasn't planning on doing the decorating myself, but my husband came down with a bad case of labrythitis and spent a week in bed with his eyes closed...)
