Council fence, ivy & privacy?

Hi all

I've just bought a property & the rear garden fence is covered in ivy - some stems are as thick as my wrist - the fence is the councils.

To prolong the fences life I started clearing ivy & realised people can now see my garden from a public walkway at the back of the property. It's making me feel unsafe as there's some unsavoury characters / drug dealers that loiter on the path. 😕

As the fence is the councils, am I able to put up a trellis/screen to stop peeking Tom's or should I let the ivy grow back?

What would you do & is there anywhere I can research?

Thank you for your help 😊

As long as the additional fencing is on your land yes you can.

Additional fencing... The fencing attached to it?

When I was council, ours said that if you plan to attach something to the fence, you should file a request with the housing authority - but it's been a while so this might have changed. If you plan to set your own trellis up inside the boundaries, go wild as long as it's under 2m tall.
