Does anyone rent their outdoor space?

Hi MNers!

Would love to hear your advice...

DH and I live in a flat without any outdoor space - no garden or terrace! Our neighbour has a long garden which they never seem to use, either because it's so overgrown and they've given up trying to manage it or they just don't really need the outdoor space.

I was wondering if it sounds acceptable to ask my neighbour if we could rent their garden or part of it. We'd be happy to do it up to have a space to sit outside near our home... maybe keep a BBQ... maybe put in a plant box (and learn how to grow fruit and veg)...

Does anyone rent outdoor space near their homes or AIBU? Or on the other hand, MNers who have unused garden/terrace space - do you rent it out?

Thanks Smile

You can ask....funnily enough we've been thinking about asking to rent the next door plot to us. We're in Oz and on one side there was a tumbledown house which the owner recently demolished as it was a hazard...but now there's this HUGE empty plot....he's elderly and said he doesn't think he'll do anything with it...so we're going to ask him if we can rent it from him to use as a market garden.

You could pop a letter through their door....that's less confronting than asking face to face.

Tell them what you plan to use it for and how often youd be in it. Specify "We won't be having any parties or gatherings, and won't use it after 6.00pm" or similar as that would be most people's worry.
