Brass Taps and Corona Virus

Hi all - We are doing our bathroom and I am choosing taps at the moment. I have heard that the Corona Virus does not live on brass taps for anywhere near as long as chrome...does anyone know if this is true? I do like the look of some brass taps that I have seen and this would help me justify the extra spend to my husband :). They are not actually that much more but his wallet can be hard to open at times!

Don't know if its true but news stories have circulated before about bugs not liking the copper in brass.

Thank you. I have found some websites that seem to confirm...but I don't trust everything I read and suspected that there may be some expert mums out there!

You'd seriously choose brass taps because Corona Virus does not live on brass taps for anywhere near as long as chrome taps?

A bit extreme I'd say

PoppliosBubble · 17/04/2020 15:53

Yeah...that’s nuts.

PigletJohn · 17/04/2020 17:02

Do you employ a housemaid who will re-polish the brass (at least) twice a day; or each time they are splashed with water?

If not, consider using chromed taps, and washing your hands.

notevenat20 · 17/04/2020 17:47

It's definitely true that coronavirus lasts for hours on copper and days on steel. I don't know if brass specifically has been tested but it is plausible it would be similar to copper, if not better.

Reallybadidea · 17/04/2020 17:49

Why not go full-on infection control and get taps with sensors so that you don't even need to touch the taps?!

FancyPants20 · 17/04/2020 20:44

@PigletJohn I take it that means one has to polish brass taps all the fucking time if one wants them to look nice? Dammit ! I really like the look of brass taps, but being fundamentally lazy and consequently shit at housework, that obviously won't work for me. Angry

Haggisfish · 17/04/2020 20:45

I have the same issue with chrome tbh and they limescale up to shit.

Maybe show your OH the following article. The idea does make some sense.....

Luckily, soap was invented 4,800 years ago, and other cleaning products are also available.

Silver has antimicrobial properties, I understand.

Kdubs1981 · 18/04/2020 19:30

@user1495884620 and you can use it to kill vampires and werewolves. Added bonus

Thank you all for the input; I did manage to persuade the hubby to go for the brass taps - they arrived today. They are lovely - I know that they will take a bit more cleaning...but TBH I love the aged brass look. I went for matching brass shower, taps and standpipes in the main bathroom...but the company that I bought from also do a brushed brass finish which I bought for the en-suite. Busy weekend ahead - we are fitting them ourselves! Thank you again one and all.
