Creating a basement

We're considering hiring a firm of specialists to dig us a basement, so we get an extra floor (cheaper than moving)
Has anyone done this?

I haven't done this but saw a tv program on The London Basement Company -who do a stirling trade as it is cheaper to dig it all out than move in London. They actually have a conveyor belt system that removes all the rubble from the basement without any interuption to the property above, plus the security side.
