Self build project: period-style house?

Anyone done this? What sort of style did you go for? What did costs run to? How was getting a self-build mortgage, dealing with contractors etc? Were you pleased with the result? It's something I'm considering for the future, so would be really interested to hear others' experiences. Thanks!

We’re in the middle of self building a contemporary eco house. Finding a plot of land would be the starting point that might take the most time.

I couldn’t imagine doing it and not building an energy efficient house though that seems like the best thing about it.

It’s taken us over 4 years to get to here but we’re now on track to be done in the summer... finally
