Blue kitchen - will it date quickly?

I want to replace our kitchen cupboard doors and want to go for colour rather than white/wood. Mid grey seems to be everywhere/past it these days and I reckon dark blue (think F&B Hague) is going that way too - everyone I know who's done their kitchen recently has it. Also I find both pretty cold and too dark for our kitchen.

I am considering a pale blue but worried it will go the same way and look dated in 5 years.

Any thoughts or other suggestions?

You can't possibly guarantee what will or won't be popular though. Decorate your house how you like. I'm sure lots of people think my house is a bit old fashioned but every room makes me happy so I couldn't care less.

I think that dark blue is too popular too. I know someone that designs kitchens and loads are being done in Hague blue.

That being said I’ll be going for a black kitchen in my next house! Dark grey/black cabinets below, thin white granite worktops and white above the counter tops. I think this will have a bit more longevity in terms of trends/classic design.

I always think you should be as neutral as possible with the big expensive stuff and have fun with the cheaper easy to change stuff.

We've just had a cook's blue kitchen put in. Love it.

I don't see why it would date because it's simple and not specifically trendy.

I think the all grey or (just coming in) black and white fashions do look very 'of a particular time'.

You have to be very careful with black worktops, they’re one of those things that were in but have dated. I wouldn’t use cool colours with black. A warm toned mushroomy type colour would be best suited. Would seriously consider replacing the worktops though.

This is my kitchen, it's Farrow and Ball off black. As you can see the colour really does change depending on the other fittings. The range cooker is orange too.

Why don’t you consider getting new doors than can be painted, then If the colour becomes too popular, you can repaint.

Personally, I think two tone, isn't a great look and will date. We have gone for coloured units (kind of light blue/green depending how you look at them) , and hopefully the granite work surface (we haven't picked yet) will pick out the colour.

I got a high gloss silver 10 years ago for all the units. Love it. Don't care if it dates, as its fairly easily to just replace the cupboard doors isn't it?

(stuff like floor tiles/kitchen splashback/wall tiles and worktop are all a plain black or swirling marble black)

Op, I'd go with changing the doors too, it's relatively easy then to just repaint if you want a change.

I am going to replace the cupboard doors, and yes will go for something that can be repainted.

Definitely not replacing the granite as a) it's good quality, in good nick and I don't like chucking things in that state and b)I don't know what I'd go for instead. I like wood but am too lazy am a bit concerned about the upkeep

sahbear - I do know what you mean, 2 tone may date, though I guess if I prefer one of the colours after a while I could just paint it all to match. Your light/blue green sounds nice, is it from a kitchen range or a paint colour like F&B?

I’ve put a blue kitchen in my last house and my current one. The lighter one was f&b light blue, and my new one (a bit darker) is Dulux denim drift. I have been pleased with both. Grey/blue colours are great because they change appearance depending on the light.

becky they are both lovely and I think will stay quite timeless.
The colour I'm more worried about is v dark, like Hague blue - yours is more unusual

F&B light blue very pretty... I like borrowed light too and am considering that

Ok here’s mine.
It’s what I liked, so I got it. I couldn’t care less if the entire world now wants stiffkey blue kitchens, it doesn’t make the slightest bit of difference when I’m enjoying my kitchen.

IMO the only kitchens that really date quickly are anything that’s super-trendy for a while, like grey, or glossy bright red or black. (Can’t understand anyone wanting black, BTW, except perhaps in a large and very modern city flat with huge windows to offset the darkness. And even then....)

A classic style in a pale matte colour will IMO look nice for a long time.

If you’re thinking of it looking dated from a selling POV a few years down the line, then TBH some people will always want to rip perfectly nice kitchens out because they’re not the latest style/colour, , or else not quite to their taste.

I quite fancy a black kitchen but not city slicker style, more like this picture, it’s not an obvious choice but black is a neutral and I think it works really well

I’d go with light blue, it will look good with black. Parma Grey is a good blue/grey. Purple and pink is very... individual if you want something nobody else has that’s the one!
