Extension / loft conversion thread 2020

Hello,

Thought I'd start a thread for 2020 extenders and converters.

Might be good for us each time say a bit about what works we have planned / are in the midst of if folks are happy to share some / al details.

Current house:
1970s semi with 2.5 (!) bedrooms on South Coast ( Sussex).
Single storey extension ( large kitchen / diner with bifolds) was completed in 2013.

Planned works
Loft conversion with full width rear dormer and small front dormer to create a new master bedroom with large bathroom.

Stage
Planning permission received, builder appointed to start in March

Costs
Build is £60k including VAT. Bathroom / decor extra.
It is a double dormer with aluminium sliding doors to rear and lots of pipe work due to siting the new bathroom at the opposite end to the existing bathroom below.
It's more than expected but we have non-standard plans and are doing the work to stay in the house for years as opposed to maximising profit to sell.

Reasons for doing work
An adult space to hide away and relax!
Also our son has additional needs and we may need to use au pairs in the future ( new room needed). As our son gets older he may need to live with us into adulthood

Plans
Attached

Next steps
Party wall agreement
Deciding on bathroom fittings / flooring within budget

@bananabunch119 that looks great. It helps me to visualise mine. How long has it taken to get to that point?

birdbrained · 07/02/2020 18:31

Great progress @bananabunch119 ! I love a good progress shot. Not much movement for us, apparently they're waiting for a delivery Hmm. Shame as we've had three days of good weather. Hasn't stopped them sending the first invoice though!

bananabunch119 · 07/02/2020 19:11

@minniemooblue if we hadn't had the setback with the roof I would say 4 weeks. Today the plasterers competed.

minniemooblue · 07/02/2020 20:03

@bananabunch119 4 weeks from start to where you are now?
It would be amazing if ours happens that quickly!!

WhereDoesThisToiletGo · 07/02/2020 20:06

I think @bananabunch119 builders might be even quicker than @MyNameIsJane!

bananabunch119 · 07/02/2020 20:17

@minniemooblue we moved out on the 8th of January so it's been 4 and a bit weeks. If the roof hasn't been taken back off we would have been here earlier. They also did a few days before Christmas putting up the outside wall before they started on the inside.

Pashazade · 08/02/2020 07:59

Thanks WhereDTTG, I hadn't come across them and it means I can order a carcass that goes with the rest of the kitchen, perfect!

lightlypoached · 09/02/2020 17:01

It's a room of contrasts in our extension 😂

Still waiting for a kitchen.

Have spent hours and hours painting and feels like we've hardly made a dent.

How is everyone else getting on ?

lightlypoached · 09/02/2020 17:02

@bananabunch119 that looks fab. Huuuuge

birdbrained · 09/02/2020 18:21

@lightlypoached I am
In love with your extension... those windows are gorgeous!

missfliss · 09/02/2020 18:46

@bananabunch119 and @lightlypoached looking great!

We have scaffolding going up tomorrow. Then work starts in earnest on 24th.

We have to order and pay for the aluminium sliding doors for the loft room next week too.

Other than that I have ordered some bedside tables from John Lewis. It's jumping the gun a bit but we will get the new matching bed in there too eventually and they have given us £100 in vouchers for spending over £500 - so it seemed to make sense !

Doors are going on tomorrow and DH and eldest DD stripper the walls for the living room.

minniemooblue · 13/02/2020 18:02

@missfliss we've been pencilled in to start on the 24th too!

Just waiting for the bank to release funds and the agreement with southern water.

Pashazade · 13/02/2020 18:10

Minnie you might be waiting a while on Southern Water they have taken forever to make any responses to my architect!

Peachi82 · 13/02/2020 18:12

We've got a concrete slab.
It looks all quite tiny, but I'm sure once the whole room is opened up, it'll be amazing!

minniemooblue · 13/02/2020 18:19

@Pashazade oh no really? What did you have to wait for? We've had the drains inspected and I've paid for a declaration of works and an inspection.

birdbrained · 13/02/2020 18:52

Oh @Peachi82 nice progress. We also have a basic floor. But block and beam here... itching to see the walls go up!

bananabunch119 · 13/02/2020 20:05

The extension is plastered now. Our lovely radiatprs are up. Today the builder and a carpenter have been working on our pocket doors.

Slightlysurviving · 13/02/2020 21:46

It's all looking really great loving the pictures. Some fab spaces coming together. Banana where did you get your tall radiator it's just what I am after? We are just waiting for the start and have done our bits in prep such as knocking down the garage. Currently checking builders insurance docs before I send them off to our insurance company. Very dull indeed.

bananabunch119 · 13/02/2020 23:20

@Slightlysurviving they are from www.bigbathroomshop.co.uk/milano-aruba-white-vertical-designer-radiator-all-sizes-78656 we needed a rrally high btu because of the size of the room and these were the strongest we found.

Peachi82 · 14/02/2020 08:03

Ah, this is on my list to do... Calculate how many radiators we need. And make a list where power sockets should go.

How big is your room going to be, bananabunch?

Pashazade · 14/02/2020 09:44

@minnie ahh you might be alright we're waiting on decisions about stuff! Which apparently can't be done quickly.....

WhereDoesThisToiletGo · 14/02/2020 13:09

@Peachi82 get going on your socket and radiator plan asap. It's surprising how early they start the infrastructure once you have walls built

RestorationInsanity · 14/02/2020 13:36

So nice to see some progress pictures. @lightlypoached your room looks so warm and inviting! This is where we're currently at, with the rest of the block work for the side extension currently going on, ready for
roofing next week. French doors for the back of the kitchen and new side door have arrived but won't be going in for a while.

Extension / loft conversion thread 2020
bananabunch119 · 14/02/2020 13:53

@Peachi82 I think about 5m wide and 6m long. The extension built out 3m.
