Extension / loft conversion thread 2020

Hello,

Thought I'd start a thread for 2020 extenders and converters.

Might be good for us each time say a bit about what works we have planned / are in the midst of if folks are happy to share some / al details.

Current house:
1970s semi with 2.5 (!) bedrooms on South Coast ( Sussex).
Single storey extension ( large kitchen / diner with bifolds) was completed in 2013.

Planned works
Loft conversion with full width rear dormer and small front dormer to create a new master bedroom with large bathroom.

Stage
Planning permission received, builder appointed to start in March

Costs
Build is £60k including VAT. Bathroom / decor extra.
It is a double dormer with aluminium sliding doors to rear and lots of pipe work due to siting the new bathroom at the opposite end to the existing bathroom below.
It's more than expected but we have non-standard plans and are doing the work to stay in the house for years as opposed to maximising profit to sell.

Reasons for doing work
An adult space to hide away and relax!
Also our son has additional needs and we may need to use au pairs in the future ( new room needed). As our son gets older he may need to live with us into adulthood

Plans
Attached

Next steps
Party wall agreement
Deciding on bathroom fittings / flooring within budget

It’s so annoying that they said they had the damn things. Now going to waste more time tomorrow looking and bloody samples

Fingers crossed @loofah01 that the window gods look kindly on you soon - I feel your pain, but also great to hear you can still get most stuff done without them.

Choices are hard enough @intheningnangnong without supply issues. Hope you find the right brick soon!

intheningnangnong · 11/06/2020 21:56

Hope you find the right brick soon!

Now tell honestly, did you ever think you’d be typing that? Grin

Loofah01 · 12/06/2020 16:58

Appliances turned up today on site. They look massive! Also had the pendant lights turn up and 5kg of grass seed!
Had a good chat with the site manager this morning to make sure we're all on the same page and despite set backs and the small delay on flooring, we'll be OK. Unless the windows are delayed in which case we're very much not.

birdbrained · 12/06/2020 20:32

@intheningnangnong well there are stranger things I've found myself saying at the moment! Like 'oh my god they've got flour in stock', 'yes let's order a whole leg of Serrano ham to get us through lockdown' and 'what lovely sourdough crumpets you've made Mr Birdbrained' 😂... do you sense that asides from building my life revolves around food?

intheningnangnong · 12/06/2020 20:57

I’d write a longer reply @birdbrained, but I’m occupied with a large bag of crisps Grin

missfliss · 12/06/2020 20:59

Well we have some progress - main room is plastered in loft but still hallway and bathroom and stairs to go.
Bath arrived

Next week more plastering and Juliet balcony to go up. Finally scaffolding going away.

Week after hopefully carpentry and second fix.

Waiting for a decorator quotes too.

Can I join? Planning on a length to length loft extension (I think) using the study for stairs -it is sloped and has eves but hoping to raising the roof and go up- already 6 bedroom but would like a chill room. Haven't even thought about planning or costs yet, just starting out. Also want to extend the detacted garage which is parallel but further back from the house -out the the house line and go up slightly and make a self contained flat -but we will see.The plans for the garage are done and will cost £30K will see about the loft.

We were part of this board in 2019. Stay with it ladies (&men) it's definitely worth the pain and hassle. Though I don't have enough time to to keep it clean as appreciate it properly, it makes me so happy every day

@CoffeeRevelLove I bookmarked your kitchen posts on the earlier thread whilst lurking because I loved it so much! What sort of flooring did you go with? Also loved the painted beam...

weepingwillow22 · 12/06/2020 21:33

Welcome summerday. What a great project. I could really do with a chill room at present.

Ooh exciting missfliss. It sounds like you are nearly there.

That looks great coffee, we are planning something similar but it feels a long way off at the moment. I love how you painted your steel and your lighting.

I am praying for dry weather at the moment as the rain has held up our roof this week. Typical that we have the driest spring since records began and then the only 2 days I need it to be dry for cementing the ridge tiles it chucks it down Angry

CoffeeRevelLove · 12/06/2020 21:42

@birdbrained that's very kind, thank you. I love it.

CoffeeRevelLove · 12/06/2020 21:42

@birdbrained it's Amtico Honey oak

CoffeeRevelLove · 12/06/2020 21:44

Hold tight @weepingwillow22 it will come together well in the end. It always feels insurmountable at points (did I mention Roann too 6 visits to get the granite right and they never fixed the stain due to them not sealing the granite?

You'll get there in the end x

Slightlydustcovered · 13/06/2020 07:15

Well we are due to knock through Monday, we won't have hot water or a bathroom, so we are moving in to a caravan today in a mobile home site down the road for a week to let them make it habitable. Hopefully it all goes well, it's been an utter pain to sort out so not something we can easily extend. this time in a week we will see Hmm

birdbrained · 13/06/2020 07:51

Fingers crossed @Slightlydustcovered hope it all goes smoothly. It's funny of all the things I stressed about regarding our extension - building during a global pandemic - wasn't one of them...

missfliss · 13/06/2020 19:42

Hello fellow extendees and converters.

Beautiful pictures @coffee - I love those Xmas pics - that tree is spectacular.

Well I can't really compete with those pics but am continuing to try and make our front garden look better following the door makeover. Base coat for path stencilling is down - effect will be something like the picture next to it

@CoffeeRevelLove I remember your blue grey outside cladding. It's so lovely to see a finished extension being lived in and enjoyed. Your room has so much personality, I love the little random objects living in the turquoise beam!

missfliss · 14/06/2020 12:30

Tiles ordered. For some reason this decision seems to have been the hardes of the whole thing. I don't know why!

So much choice and you have to see it every day lol

Just had a call from delivery driver reversing up the single lane track to deliver some doors :)

Painting all day yesterday and shoulders pretty achey today!
