moving to Salisbury area mid 2008

Hi Due to husbands work we are relocating to the Salisbury area. We need to be there for Oct 2008 but I would prefer to do the move in the summer so son can start school in the Sept. Any advice on where to live and if possible where to avoid (without causing offence!) would be great. Have been for one brief visit so have very rough view of area but main priority is schools (primary) and local facilities as I don't think we cut out for quiet country living and don't really want to have to drive to get milk! Many Thanks.

ooh fabulous, I live in the Salisbury area and love it

Avoid Bemerton Heath like the plague, houses are much cheaper there for a reason and the secondary school there is dreadful (not an issue now but if you plan to still be here in a few years..). Bishopdown Farm/Hampton Park is very populer if you like new build and there is a good school there and facilities such as a doctors, shop and vets.

Wilton is nice too and Downton is also pleasant if you prefer to live out of the area. Both have good schools.

TBH its hard to go wrong in this area as 'bad' areas are few and far between - just avoid Bemerton.

Oh and apparently one of the most popular primary schools is St Mark's Infants/Junior on Somerset Road. The catchment area around is priced accordingly and I don't think it's aesthetically pleasing really anyway.

Cool! have looked at website for school on Bishopdown Farm and son loves the look of it! Not a big fan of new build but it does seem an easy option for the facilities we are looking for. Is it easy to get to coast from Salisbury? We currently life as far from the coast as is possible so would be lovely to be able to go on spur of moment and make the most of the occasional sunshine?!

We frequently head down to the coast, an hour maximum usually. If he likes boats you can go to Southampton to see the cruise ships and marinas, only 25mins away.

I live near Wilton and can throughly recomend it out that way, very pretty.

I used to live about 12 miles from Salisbury, and my family still do. Nothing to add (as we are country bumpkins!) except I'm really jealous. It is a fab place to live, and I miss it terribly.

We have known for several years that we may have to move infact ever since I moved here! But it has come just as I was getting my life sorted. New job that I love, almost finished decorating the house, have found garden under the weeds and got some really good mates but am excited about the new adventure!
