Landing and stairs skirting different height

I have 6inch skirting on my landing, but the skirting that meets it at the top of the stairs is shorter, I think about 2 inch.

I'm replacing the landing skirt anyway, but to 5 inch ideally. Any idea how I can join the two heights up so it doesn't look odd.
The profiles are also different, ogee or torus on the landing, chamfered on stairs.

Or is it best to just make the new skirting the same height (which won't match the rest of the house)?

I would expect you would need to replace the skirting all the way up the stairs. This would be because the change in height of skirting boards must be absorbed by the length of stairs.
You’d need a good chippy.

I thought the stairs would be built 'in' to the skirting so replacing it would be a big job.

Google isn't very clear, but it some results suggest we'd need to take the stair treads off to take out the existing skirt, or that they could be part of the structure

I suppose it could be,
This would be why I’d get a carpenter in to advise.

Replacing the stair skirting sounds like an unnecessarily big job. The new landing skirting can be cut and shaped to slope down to the height of the stair skirting where they meet.
