Removing ceramic floor tiles from concrete floor - how messy?

We're having our kitchen ceramic floor tiles replaced (with lino). The inherited tiles were put down badly with a "dot and dab" method, into a concrete floor. Now several are broken and lots of others are loose/wonky. If anyone has had ceramic tiles taken up, how messy/dusty a job is it? I won't be able to remove kitchen units or inbuilt appliances obviously, but wondering how best to protect everything. Thanks
