Mushrooms growing in my cellar...help!

Hi
I’ve noticed in my cellar that there are mushrooms growing! Me and DP have lived here over 2 years and have never seen it before.
Not quite sure how to explain it, but where the old window that goes down to the cellar was (which has now been boarded up) there’s wood around the old vent (in the cellar rather than outside) which is where the mould is growing.

I’ve attached a picture but any idea if they’re dangerous and how we’d go about getting rid of them?

Thanks in advance :)

Probably shouldn't fry them up - they look dead scary 😱

They don't look good. Any orange dust, like brick dust?

DogAndCatPerson · 22/10/2019 20:39

So the ventilation to the cellar has all been blocked? That won’t be helping

awishes · 22/10/2019 20:40

I had this with a water leak, is that possible?

Slightlysurviving · 22/10/2019 20:46

Mushrooms grow in dark and damp conditions. I think this indicates it is now more damp than in the past. I wouldn't worry too much as it's a cellar and not your lounge but I'm no expert. And it may be worth getting a professional to check for damp and if there is a source. As an aside you could try growing delicious mushrooms down there as it looks like they would thrive.

it means the wood is rotting. Improve ventilation so it can dry out. Also look for sources of water.

WatchoutfortheROUS · 22/10/2019 20:49

Are you're sure they mushrooms? Looks like dry rot to me?

WatchoutfortheROUS · 22/10/2019 20:50

*they're

Mushroom, rot, its all fungus. Depends on the type.

Whatever it is, you need to get rid of the water, get rid of the wood. Dry, light and ventilation. As much as possible in a cellar.

LostStars39 · 22/10/2019 21:03

Sorry for delay, don’t think I can see any orange dust just general dirt (it’s a horrible cellar and I hate going down there)

When there’s really heavy rain the area does get a bit damp, although it’s fairly well sealed. Will post more pics

This is the piece of wood covering the old window so it’s probably just the previous owners taking shortcuts - which they seem to have done throughout most the house!

Thanks everyone for your help, will try and dry it out a bit more in there and remove the wood!
