Appleton, Warrington - A good place to live?

Hi,

I currently live in South Manchester and in the next year or two we're looking to move further out of the city as we now have a baby.

Places we're looking at are Appleton (and neighbouring south warrington areas) and Lymm. We're after places with good schools and close to countryside/walks.

What I'd really like is an older detached property in Lymm, but realistically I think our budget is going to get us a 90's 'new build' in Appleton. I've been looking at a few on rightmove but I've noticed the proximity of Appleton Prison. Should this be putting me off? Everyone always says how nice Appleton is and no one really mentions it! So i'm not sure what to think.

Hi Sorry don't know about Appleton but we relocated to Newton-le-Willows - the other side of the M62 and we are very happy. Few of the older style houses but if you do like that style you might want to look at Globourne. Good luck

Appleton is nice. The prison is an open one for low risk offenders so I doubt it causes anyone much trouble.

I live in Appleton and really like it. The older houses are expensive here but still cheaper than places like Didsbury Altrincham etc. The prison is in Appleton Thorn. I've never heard of there being any issues but I don't live on the doorstep. Schools are good in Appleton and Lymm. Stockton Heath Village is lovely but a pretty long walk from some parts of Appleton. If you can get a house in walking distance I would recommend it if possible as it's great being able to just wander down there!
Just be aware there is going to be a lot of development around some of the 90s estates so look into that before you buy.
Good luck!

I live nearby and it’s a lovely area. Close to Stockton Heath which is great for restaurants, bars and shops. Excellent schools. Traffic can be a nightmare getting in and out, but other than that we love living here.
There are some extremely expensive houses in Appleton and also the surrounding areas like Stockton Heath, Walton and Grappenhall, but also some reasonably priced (for the area) houses too but they do tend to be the newer built ones. Appleton prison shouldn’t put you off. It’s a category D prison. I don’t hear of any issues.

Oh and yes as a PP mentioned there’s plans for a 71 houses to be built up in Appleton Thorn which people really aren’t happy about at all so that may be a consideration. Selfishly I’m quite pleased as we may be able to buy one Blush

Thanks for the info everyone!

@Heymummee just looked up the new developments. We said we didn't want a new build but they may be worth a look as they seem much more affordable. I get why the local residents are not pleases though - its looks like loads more have had planning approved!

@NWQM its funny you should suggest Golborne as thats where i’m originally from. Its not really somewhere i want to go back to as we want to be around more of a green belt area. I also went to school in N-le-W 😂.

I think the new houses look lovely and they really are more affordable. Locals are upset because local services are already strained and the traffic will only increase, and there’s been little reassurance as to what’s going to be done to alleviate that. I think wherever you go in Warrington it’s going to be the same though. More and more homes being built without the infrastructure! Traffic is terrible in this town wherever you are.
As for schools and doctors etc, we’ve never had any trouble here and we’ve lived in Stockton Heath (now in Walton) for 6 years.

@Jessesgirl13 Warrington is thriving which is code for lots of developments all over 😀

And sorry meant to add re the prison. If it worries you then you do need to check it out because there was a campaign last summer as they had announced a change to the category of the prison. I'm not sure if the campaign was successful
