Types of external doors

Hi everyone,
I'm a complete rookie when it comes to renovating but we're looking at getting an external passage door replaced.

The passage is covered between house and garage (1950s semi with garage separate but joined with passage and doors at both ends.)

The door is currently painted wood and is rotten so needs replacing ASAP. A new door is likely to take a fair bartering from rain and sun so want something that's going to last. The door frame could also do with replacing as well.

My question is: Do I go for upvc or wood? And if wood, what sort?? (I'm a rookie!) ideally I'd like some glazing to let the light into the passage.

Any advice?
Thanks

I'd go for a composite door they're quite expensive though
