Can anyone tell me what this is?

We recently purchased a property and have a pipe sticking out of the ground in the living room. Can anyone tell me what this is?

We had 2 contractors in the property, one said it was a disused gas pipe and the other said it was used for grounding the property in the past and no longer needed. Anyone had anything similar before?

Thanks!

Looks like a radiator or gas fire used to be there

I doubt very much it would be for grounding the property. That'd be an Earth Rod. Is there just the one capped off pipe? If so, an old gas pipe for a gas fire is most likely. If there's another nearby then maybe an old radiator pipe. Odd location for either though. Wouldn't usually find a gas fire or radiator in the corner of a room.

99% sure it’s a capped off gas pipe

As we had similar in our house next to where a former gas stove was

What colour is it if you scratch off the paint?

Looks like a capped off gas pipe to me. We had one under our stairs when we moved in to this house that we were told had actually never been connected.
My now exh decided to cut it off at floor level with a grinder - luckily while I was out - only to discover it was still live! I came home to a strong smell of gas and British Gas on the scene! Proceed with caution 🤣
