How to find a good builder in a new area?

Moving to a new area and need to find a good builder. Don't know anyone to ask. Does anyone have any tips to find one?

Not going near those rated people type websites again. Then getting abusive messages from a guy who said I fucked him over as he paid for a quote and now can't feed his children...

Is there a local Facebook group you can join? I'm on one and people ask on there for recommendations on cleaners, plumbers, etc.

I'm in a similar position - although our new neighbours are builders! Very sensibly they have said they won't do our extension (they must know that I'm going to be a nightmare menopausal client incapable of making any sort of coherent decision)... but what they did say was look at local builders and then go to some places they have built and ask the owners how they found them. Which seems like good advice....
